Message from the Pretenders

by Oui Mon Jan 3rd, 2022 at 08:33:35 AM EST

In the world's leading democracy, subversive acts by states and Trump allies indicate the Jan. 6th insurrection is ongoing like a smoldering peat fire underground.

The book title should have been:

    T R E A S O N

Jan. 6 committee prepares to go public as findings mount

While the fundamental facts of Jan. 6 are known, the committee says the extraordinary trove of material they have collected -- 35,000 pages of records so far, including texts, emails and phone records from people close to Trump -- is fleshing out critical details of the worst attack on the Capitol in two centuries, which played out on live television.

They hope to fill in the blanks about the preparations before the attack, the financing behind the Jan. 6 rally that preceded it and the extensive White House campaign to overturn the 2020 election. They are also investigating what Trump himself was doing as his supporters fought their way into the Capitol.

True accountability may be fleeting. Congressional investigations are not criminal cases and lawmakers cannot dole out punishments. Even as the committee works, Trump and his allies continue to push lies about election fraud while working to place similarly minded officials at all levels of state and local government.

"I think that the challenge that we face is that the attacks on our democracy are continuing -- they didn't come to an end on Jan. 6."

This won't stop the crazies and millions believing conspiracies ...

I don't think it was particularly close a year ago.

If I got the picture correct, the Trump plan was to establish control over the streets by:
A1) get a pro-Trump rally going
A2) get Antifa out in force to protest said rally
A3) get the National Guard out to control Antifa
while at the same time:
B1) get Mike Pence to use his ceremonial role to declare certain state delegations invalid
B2) get those states to instead send a delegation appointed by the state government
B3) get appointed president by the modified electoral convention

Essentially only step A1 suceeded, and when step B1 failed, they tried to use A1 to force B1. Which didn't work, and the rally goers had not enough preparation to actually stand a chance to grab control of Congress.

Even if all the pieces had come together it doesn't account for countermoves. What if the Democrat controlled Senate assembled their delegates from the old electoral convention? And the various right wing militias that was in all likelihood heavily infiltrated by FBI (because they tend to be, also see the reporting in Revolver News), would they have been ordered off the table at some critical junction? What if the appointment of new electors had been tied up in courts?

It is one lazy attempt at a coup.

What is more worrying is the political climate where this coup attempt becomes a possibility. You have at least since Clinton a de-legitimisation of presidents elected by the Democrats, and with Trump that became mutual. You have the ongoing republican electoral cheating since at least Bush, and related to that the by design hackable election system. Also the by now mutual media systems that appeal to their partisans by simplified stories of heroes and villains.

All on top of an economy making larger portions of the population destitute and a few billionaires on the way to becoming trillionaires, a global empire that just lost its longest war, and a pandemic that neither side can manage.

If this continues the risks are obvious that the next attempt will be less lazy. While more likely coming from the Republicans, I would however not rule out that it might come from the Democrats. Remember the Clinton campaigns manouverings to get electors to be faithless?

I recently read about the politics of the Third French Republic, and there is some similarities in the unstable political system. However, it managed to wobble on.

In any case they had better get going, because campaign season for the 2022 congressional elections is upon us. Unless they get some high profile convictions in the next couple of months, it will all probably be wasted effort.

Four other countries with nuclear weapons, not recognised under NPT: Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea - have also shown no signs of reducing their stockpiles.

Meanwhile, the breakdown of the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran and the deadlock so far in attempts to salvage it, have raised the risks of nuclear proliferation, particularly in the Middle East.

Monday's joint statement was aimed at improving the atmosphere at the NPT review conference.

China's vice foreign minister Ma Zhaoxu welcomed Monday's statement as "positive and weighty", adding it would "help increase mutual trust and replace competition among major powers with coordination and cooperation".

Jonathan Pollard Was One of the Most Damaging Spies in U.S. History

Jonathan Pollard, who served 30 years in a US prison for providing classified information to Israel, arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport together with his wife, Esther, early in the morning of December 30. Descending from Sheldon and Miriam Adelson's private plane, he knelt and kissed the tarmac, helping Esther to do the same, and they said the Shehecheyanu blessing together.

Waiting for them was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - in what was apparently a surprise welcome. "Now you can begin your lives anew in freedom and happiness. Now you're home," Netanyahu told Pollard. "What a moment. What a moment!"

Carter warns America 'teeters on the brink of a widening abyss' in stark op-ed ahead of January | CNN News |

Carter said he had hope that the deadly attack on the Capitol "would shock the nation into addressing the toxic polarization that threatens our democracy."

But politicians, he said, "have leveraged the distrust they have created to enact laws that empower partisan legislatures to intervene in election processes" and "seek to win by any means, and many Americans are being persuaded to think and act likewise, threatening to collapse the foundations of our security and democracy with breathtaking speed."

Not to diminish the achievement of the security troop at Capitol that day, but a bicameral system elected by a plurality vote is not the democracy I know.

I've always lived under an unicameral parliament elected by proportional system where constitutionality of laws is checked before they even go to vote. It just works. And it feels like democracy.

Why count votes when it's easier to steal an election as America witnessed in 1960 and 2000. Prepare the battle field well ahead of the Election and one does not need to use the violence of a Jan. 6th insurrection.

Assault on American democracy has gained pace since US Capitol attack | The Guardian Opinion - Sam Levine |

But the effort to disrupt and undermine American democracy didn't end on 6 January. In fact, it has speeded up over the 12 months since then.

Working in state legislatures across the US, Republicans have launched a methodical effort to undermine the post-election processing of votes and the people who count them. One year after the effort to steal the 2020 election for Donald Trump failed, Republicans have put in place machinery to ensure future attempts could be successful. The potential for a stolen election in the US is higher than ever.

In recent years there has been growing alarm over the way the Republican party has eagerly embraced voter suppression - efforts to change election rules to make it harder to vote. But what's happening now, experts say, is new - an effort to take control of the administration of elections and vote counting itself.

"What we're seeing is an unprecedented, multi-pronged assault on the foundations of our democracy," said Wendy Weiser, who directs the democracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice. "We're really seeing an all-out effort to undermine election administration in America."

Republicans have built this attack around three pillars. First, they have encouraged and fomented doubt about the results of the 2020 election. Second, they have passed new laws that inject more partisanship into election administration. And third, they have sought to take over key election offices from which they could exert enormous unilateral power over vote-counting and post-election certification.

Florida could shield whites from 'discomfort' of racist past | NBC News |

Critical race theory is a way of thinking about America's history through the lens of racism. It was developed during the 1970s and 1980s in response to what scholars viewed as a lack of racial progress following the civil rights legislation of the 1960s. It centers on the idea that racism is systemic in the nation's institutions and that they function to maintain the dominance of white people in society.

Conservatives reject it, saying it is a world view derived from Marxism that divides society by defining people as oppressors and oppressed based on their race. They call it an attempt to rewrite American history and make white people believe they are inherently racist.

Biden's administration is in shambles. It's not entirely his fault | The Guardian Opinion |

A year into his term, the Biden administration is in shambles. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema's support for the legislative filibuster has killed the Democratic voting rights effort. Biden's Build Back Better plan, a massive reconciliation package containing initiatives on issues from the climate crisis to childcare is, for now, dead in the water; Manchin and Sinema will determine whether any of its provisions survive in attenuated form.

Immigration reform and healthcare reform, both central to Democratic intra-party debates during the 2020 primaries, have fallen entirely off the radar. The US supreme court may overturn Roe v Wade in the coming months. The latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic is still ravaging the country thanks not only to Covid denialists and vaccine skeptics on the right, but an administration that has struggled to keep its promises on easy access to tests.

Abroad, Biden's courageous withdrawal from Afghanistan - a kept promise even the president's harshest critics on the left were willing to give him credit for - has been marred by economic sanctions that have left 23 million Afghans without enough to eat, and the media is already itching to blame Biden for a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Suspect In Alleged Montenegrin Coup Plot Pictured With Lavrov In Belgrade | RFERL - Dec. 14, 2016 |

A suspect in an alleged plot to assassinate pro-Western Montenegrin politician Milo Djukanovic has posted a photograph of himself standing near Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov this week in Belgrade.

Nemanja Ristic, who is wanted in Montenegro for conspiracy to kill Djukanovic in an alleged foreign-organized coup attempt in October, posted the image on his Instagram account on December 13.

The photo shows Ristic standing just steps away from Lavrov at a ceremony at the Grave Of Liberators cemetery in the Serbian capital on December 12. Lavrov visited the cemetery, where a number of Soviet soldiers who died while liberating Belgrade during World War II are interred, at the start of a two-day official visit to Belgrade.

Ristic gave no information as to why he posted the image.

The three women with whom Lavrov is posing in the photograph are all members of the right-wing nationalist Serbian group Zavetnici (Patrons), which participated in a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the fallen Russian soldiers. One of the members of the group, Milica Djurdjevic, told RFE/RL's Balkan Service reporter on the scene that Ristic is not a member of the group.

Serbia's Right-Wingers Dream of Nationalist Resurgence | Balkan Insight - May 20, 2013 |

The protests over the Kosovo agreement revealed deep divisions among Serbia's right-wingers, but they could still become a serious force if they tap into public disappointment with the government.

Sitting under a religious icon next to a map of Kosovo at the Belgrade headquarters of the new Zavetnici (Testifiers) movement, Milica Djurdjevic dreams about unifying all the movements that are fighting against European Union membership and want to keep Kosovo within Serbia.

Djurdjevic, political science student, said that her organisation, launched in February last year, has several thousand members. It uses a modern internet approach to popularise its views and membership is growing, she insisted.

"We are fighting for a change in the way the state is run - a change of government, looking towards Russia and against EU membership," Djurdjevic explained, eyeing the small Serbian flag on her desk.

Zavetnici was one of the various right-wing groups that protested in the capital against the EU-brokered Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina on May 10th . Demonstrators included some leading Orthodox Church officials, opposition groups like the Serbian Radical Party and Democratic Party of Serbia, DSS, the conservative, pro-church Dveri movement and the banned ultra-nationalist organisation Obraz.
