German Dissent Cause for Sabotage Pipelines?

by Oui Sat Oct 1st, 2022 at 08:55:29 AM EST

By destruction of Nord Stream 1 and 2, the United States and/or a NATO ally succeeded in destruction of an off-ramp for de-escalation of the Ukraine crisis. Listening to national security experts from the States there is only a way forward to go for the "kill" of Putin's demise and the annihilation of the Russian Federation, a Republic crossing eleven time zones. The threat of NATO buoyed by fascist states with a grudge pre WWII to Moscow was seen similar to the preparation of Germany in 1939-41. The Soviet Union suffered loss of lives above 40 million, an image of an existential threat nearly 80 years ago. The succes of the Red Army on the Eastern Front counted as major factor for the liberation of Europe from Nazi terror. Only China under Communist rule and extreme hunger suffered a greater loss of lives.

Although dividing the world in zones of influence is outdated, diplomacy should always have top priority to prevent total destruction in a nuclear conflict.

Activate Nord Stream 2 ASAP, says German parliament Vice President | Politico - Aug. 19, 2022 |

'Addiction to Russian gas kills,' says Ukraine's foreign minister

Germany should allow the blocked Nord Stream 2 pipeline to begin pumping Russian natural gas so "people do not have to freeze in winter and that our industry does not suffer serious damage," Wolfgang Kubicki, vice president of the German parliament, said Friday.

His comments prompted a fierce response from Kyiv, where Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said "addiction to Russian gas kills."

The pipeline is completed, but Berlin in late February refused to allow it to go online in reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"A lot of people out there, particularly in eastern Europe - who've been living in the shadow of Russia - have been screaming their heads off over the last two decades that this was always coming," Marzec-Manser said, adding "everyone else" had refused to accept such a scenario.

There were still "genuine concerns" that once the war in Ukraine ended, Russian volumes to Europe would also return "by one means or another".

"But I genuinely think that we've gone past the point of no return - once the gas is gone, it's gone."

Germany's Die Linke on verge of split over sanctions on Russia | The Guardian - Sept. 20, 2022 |

Leftwing party's future in balance after series of resignations, as former co-leader calls coalition 'stupidest government in Europe'

Such a split would be likely to spell the end of Die Linke, 15 years after it was founded in a merger between the successor to East Germany's Socialist Unity party and former Social Democrats disillusioned by their party's direction under Gerhard Schröder, and just under a decade after it formed the largest opposition force in the Bundestag's 2013-17 term.

In her speech last Thursday, Wagenknecht had called chancellor Olaf Scholz's left-leaning governing coalition "the stupidest government in Europe" because it imposed sanctions on Russia, which supplied over half of Germany's gas needs before the start of the war in the spring.

"Yes, of course the war in Ukraine is a crime", Wagenknecht said. "But how dumb is the idea that we can punish Putin by pushing millions of German families into poverty and destroy our economy while Gazprom makes record profits?" The speech was greeted with applause not only by the Linke leadership but also by delegates of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).

Wagenknecht no longer holds any official positions in Die Linke, but was nominated to be its sole speaker in the recent parliamentary session on the national climate budget.

"The thesis that the federal republic of Germany is leading an economic war against Russia reverses cause and effect", said Bodo Ramelow, the Left party state premier for Thuringia. "The phrase `the USA's economic war against Russia' is Kremlin propaganda", said Martina Renner, a former deputy leader of the leftwing outfit.

However, stable conditions in Europe are a horror for Washington, its henchmen in Berlin and for the gang ruling in Kyiv. Melnyk tweeted representatively: "Hard to believe: the ex-chancellor, who made Moscow's aggression against the Ukrainians possible with her years of pro-Putin coziness, is shamelessly philosophizing about 'how something like relations with us and Russia can be developed again'."

On Thursday evening in Goslar, Merkel repeated impassively that work would also have to be done on a pan-European security architecture in the future: »And that means: including Russia. Melnyk's answer came promptly: 'perverse'.

Helmut Kohl: A great and flawed statesman | Brookings - June 22, 2017 |

Kohl, a committed trans-Atlanticist, simply went over their heads to Washington. He recognized that U.S. President George H.W. Bush and his advisers James Baker III, George Shultz and Condoleeza Rice understood, as he did, that this was a historic chance toaccomplish the dream of a Europe whole, free and at peace [President Bush in Mainz - May 31, 1989]. His greatest achievement, however, was winning over Mitterrand and Thatcher by agreeing to a further round of European integration (including forgoing the strong Deutsche Mark for a common currency, the euro)--and thereby binding Germany's fate irrevocably to Europe's. It transformed the continent and secured him a place among his country's greatest statesmen of all time.

Yet he left public life--actually, he had to be forced out--with his reputation tarnished and diminished. Germans from both sides of the former border were angered by his airy promise in 1990 that East Germany's landscapes, ravaged by mining and pesticides, would soon be transformed into "flowering meadows" at no cost to the German taxpayer. The actual bill for unification has been estimated at 2 trillion to 3 trillion euros. It was worth every cent.

There were historians who warned a re-unification of Germany would ultimately lead to a new confrontation and a Third World War. History has not taught or convinced human kind the ugliness of wars.

A 'Europe Whole and Free and at Peace' | RAND Corp. - Sept. 8, 2009 |

The assassination of the heir to the imperial throne of Austria-Hungary in Serbia ignited World War I in August 1914. The event triggered interlocking agreements among two sets of Europe's great powers in a tiny part of the Continent that was of little account in the grand scheme of things.

Georgia is not Serbia, 2008 is not 1914, and Russia and the United States are not Russia and Imperial Germany of 1914. The various great powers of today are not armed to the teeth in confrontation with one another and they are not itching for a fight, egged on by mutually reinforcing hubris about national capabilities, will, ambitions and pride.

Hubris ... Bill Clinton stabbed Boris Yeltsin in the back by covert act to start expansion of NATO. The colour revolutions of 2004 and 2008 threw fuel on the fire. The NATO Summit in Bucharest in Spring 2008, under administration of his evil son George W. Bush [plus Bolton, Rumsfeld, Cheney and Neocon cabal] led to ultimate provocation by promising NATO membership to Georgia (War in August 2008) and Ukraine (War in February 2014 on forward).

In fact, America has double-crossed "Old Europe" and the EU leadership through the years. Making of a derelict NATO a fighting machine in wars across the globe that were not their fights whatsoever. The so-called Atlantic alliance is not for energy sustainability or an effort to save the planet. On the contrary ... it's for hegemony and become the Oil & Gas supplier of the Western World for coming decades. The mantra is to destroy Russia, a fascist endeavour. History will judge harshly American foreign policy and wars ever since the attacks of 9/11. We have been a witness to the whole string of events and could not change a dot or comma.

Michael Hudson on The Euro without Germany

Germany's rapid demise reminds me of German intelligence agent Bachmann in "A Most Wanted Man". He was led to believe he was operating on the same level as the CIA and British intelligence only to realize too late that he was being played all along.

Hudson goes all the way to what the fall of Germany will mean for the euro and what the options are for the countries of the Global South and Eurasia as they try to resist US hegemony.

By Michael Hudson, an economics professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and a research associate at Bard College's Levy Economics Institute. His latest book is The Destiny of Civilization.

The reaction to the sabotage of three of the four Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines at four points on Monday, September 26, has focused on speculation as to who did it and whether NATO will make a serious attempt to uncover the answer. Yet instead of panic, there was a great show of diplomatic relief, even calm. The disabling of these pipelines puts an end to the uncertainty and worries on the part of US / NATO diplomats that almost reached a crisis ratio the previous week, when large demonstrations were held in Germany calling for an end to sanctions and the post. to Nord Stream 2 to solve the energy shortage.

The German public was coming to understand what the closure of their steel companies, fertilizer companies, glass companies and toilet paper companies meant. These companies predicted that they would have to go out of business completely - or move operations to the United States - if Germany did not withdraw from trade and currency sanctions against Russia and allowed gas and oil imports to resume, and presumably retreat. by their astronomical increase from eight to ten times.

More Fallout From the Nord Stream Pipeline Attacks

There were questions in Washington as to whether European resolve would hold up through the winter, as well as unconfirmed reports that Berlin and Moscow were even holding secret talks to reopen Nord Stream 1 and begin the transfer of gas through Nord Stream 2.

Now Germany's fate is sealed - as is most of the continent's. There is no longer an off ramp, and Europeans are now prisoners of NATO committed to their own self-destruction.

The US Takes a Victory Lap

Energy companies and traders are making a killing on exporting LNG to Europe with some recording record profits, but the US is now dealing with much higher prices itself. Irina Slav writes at Oilprice.com:

Meanwhile, however, LNG prices have soared like an eagle, China is re-selling Russian LNG to Europe, and gas prices in the U.S. are three times higher now than they were a decade ago and up 95 percent on the futures market for November 2022 to March 2023.

Backlash against the LNG exports to Europe have already begun in the US with a group of New England states requesting that Washington help their states rather than Europe.

Due to Germany's demise, the US would seem to salvage some sort of victory from the pipeline attacks even if Russia wins on the battlefield in Ukraine but are still hoping to turn it into a multi-year conflict.

....
As there's no more off-ramp incentive for Europe, there's now no reason for Brussels not to "fight to the last Ukrainian." Hawks in Washington are rejoicing.

More Fallout From the Nord Stream Pipeline Attacks

Prior to the Nord Stream attacks, there was at least a faint possibility that sanity would prevail and Russian energy imports could resume. Now the extent of the damage means they are unlikely to carry any gas to Europe this winter even if there was political will to bring them online.

Just to recap a little of what that is likely to mean:

  • European banks are already stress-testing how they can cope with power shortages and are trying to line up generators so that ATMs and online banking don't go dark.
  • Mobile phones could stop functioning this winter if power cuts or rationing knock out parts of the mobile networks.
  • Science shutdown as institutes that operate energy-hungry supercomputers, accelerators, and laser beamlines will shutter.
  • Hundreds of thousands of excess deaths.

And yet Europe continues to double down, proposing a new round of Russian sanctions on Wednesday. They include tighter trade restrictions, more individual black listings, and an oil price cap for third countries. Hungary, though, says it won't go along with any energy sanctions, and the EU needs unanimity to impose sanctions.

Poland and three Baltic countries are upset the proposed sanctions don't go further.

Speaking of Poland, it's coming up in the world. The Baltic Pipeline that opened Tuesday will bring gas from Norway to Poland via Denmark, but has a capacity of only 10 billion M3 per year. The Nord Stream systems could carry up to 110 billion M3 per year.

US military aircraft circled Nord Stream incident site in September

Flightradar24 showed an unidentified aircraft that did not even have a helicopter icon hovering over the site. However, the aircraft's 24-bit ICAO code included in the description makes it possible to establish the model, which is the US military's Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk. The code is verified through open resources that collect data on military aircraft.

The US helicopter is also shown by the aircraft tracking service to have flown into the area of loitering over the Nord Stream pipelines from Gdansk, Poland.

On the second day of the loitering, almost in parallel with their US counterpart, a Dutch navy NH9 helicopter was flying in the vicinity of Bornholm Island, and it is expected to have been observing the Americans' activity.

US helicopters also took flights over other Nord Stream pipelines on September 10 and 19 and others stayed over the incident site for hours on the night of September 22 and September 25.

Department Press Briefing - September 28, 2022

QUESTION: All right. And then lastly, and your colleague at the White House just went - spoke about this in depth, so I just want to ask you about it - the Nord Stream explosion/leaks. We saw last night that the Secretary had a conversation with the Danish foreign minister about this. Has he had any additional conversations specifically related to these incidents? And if he has or even if he hasn't, has there been any change in your assessment of what happened?

MR PRICE: So you're right. The Secretary last night did have an opportunity to speak to his Danish counterpart, Foreign Minister Kofod. Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor, had an opportunity last night to speak to his Danish counterpart as well. The Secretary, I would expect within the coming day, potentially as soon as later today, will have an opportunity to speak to other European partners regarding what seem to be apparent acts of sabotage against the Nord Stream pipeline.

We have seen the statements from our Danish partners and from others. We are supporting European efforts to investigate this, and we're also - we also stand ready to support European efforts to mitigate any potential environmental impact. As you know, the energy impact of this apparent sabotage is and was mitigated by the fact that neither Nord Stream 2, which of course was never operational, and Nord Stream 1, because the Russians had already weaponized Nord Stream 1 by essentially turning it off - neither of these pipelines were pumping gas into Europe at the time. And so, of course, the impacts on Europe's broader energy security and energy resilience will therefore be mitigated.

Quite obvious the simplistic rhetoric by Ned Price to refer answers to NATO allies ... our hands are clean, it's not our war, we're just a interested bystander. He made a few exceptions, totally caught off guard. 😊

Nord Stream gas 'sabotage': beneficiaries and loser | Offshore - Sept. 30, 2022 |

Alongside Nord Stream, a new pipeline has been built between gas producing Norway and Poland, which has been seeking to end its reliance on Russian energy, making the region highly sensitive for Europe's energy security.

"(Russia) can intimidate Europeans through an act of sabotage. Because if they're able to blow up these pipelines in the Baltic seabed, they could do that as well to the new pipeline," said Kristine Berzina, senior fellow for security and defence at the German Marshall Fund.

However, if it was an act of sabotage, it has damaged pipelines that were built by Kremlin-controlled Gazprom and its European partners at a cost that ran into billions of dollars.

The damage also means Russia loses an element of leverage it still had over Europe, which has been racing to find other gas supplies for winter, even if the Nord Stream pipelines where not pumping gas when the leaks were discovered, analysts say.

Whoever or whatever is to blame, Ukraine may also be a beneficiary. Kyiv has long called for Europe to halt all purchases of Russian fuel - even though some gas still runs to Europe across its territory. Disrupting Nord Stream brings Kyiv's call for a full Russian fuel embargo closer to reality.

Germany and EU have been handed over a declaration of war | By Pepe Escobar |

The sabotage of the Nord Stream (NS) and Nord Stream 2 (NS2) pipelines in the Baltic Sea has ominously propelled `Disaster Capitalism' to a whole new, toxic level.

This episode of Hybrid Industrial/Commercial War, in the form of a terror attack against energy infrastructure in international waters signals the absolute collapse of international law, drowned by a "our way or the highway", "rules-based", order.

The attack on both pipelines consisted of multiple explosive charges detonated in separate branches close to the Danish island of Bornholm, but in international waters.
That was a sophisticated operation, carried out in stealth in the shallow depth of the Danish straits. That would in principle rule out submarines (ships entering the Baltic are limited to a draught of 15 meters). As for prospective "invisible" vessels, these could only loiter around with permission from Copenhagen - as the waters around Borholm are crammed with sensors, reflecting fear of incursion by Russian submarines.

Swedish seismologists registered two underwater explosions on Monday - one of them estimated at 100 kg of TNT. Yet as much as 700 kg may have been used to blow up three separate pipeline nodes. Such amount could not have possibly been delivered in just one trip by underwater drones currently available in neighboring nations.

....
The EU oligarchy is reaching an advanced process of disintegration at lightning speed. Their window of opportunity to at least attempt a role as a strategically autonomous geopolitical actor is now closed.

These EUROcrats now face a serious predicament. Once it's clear who are the perpetrators of the sabotage in the Baltic, and once they understand all the life-changing socio-economic consequences for pan-EU citizens, the kabuki will have to stop.

In 1997, the National Security Agency constructed a cyber-warfare intelligence unit which became active in 1998. However by 2000, it was named the Office of Tailored Access Operations (TAO). TAO's headquarters are termed the Remote Operations Center (ROC) and are based at the NSA headquarters at Fort Meade, Maryland.

A document viewed by SPIEGEL resembling a product catalog reveals that an NSA division called ANT has burrowed its way into nearly all the security architecture made by the major players in the industry--including American global market leader Cisco and its Chinese competitor Huawei, but also producers of mass-market goods, such as US computer-maker Dell.

In 2013, with the release of Edward Snowden's files to The Guardian, the unit is described as having software templates used to tap common people's networks, hardware, and common security such as firewalls, routers and vendor lines. The NSA ANT catalog is a 50-page classified document listing technology available to the United States National Security Agency (NSA) Tailored Access Operations (TAO) by the Advanced Network Technology (ANT) Division to aid in cyber surveillance. Most devices are described as already operational and available to US nationals and members of the Five Eyes alliance.

STATEMENT OF GEN. DAVID H. PETRAEUS, USA, COMMANDER, INTERNATIONAL SECURITY ASSISTANCE FORCE AND U.S. FORCES-AFGHANISTAN

The achievements of the past year are also very important as I prepare to provide options and a recommendation to President Obama for commencement of the drawdown of the U.S. surge forces in July.

Of note as well, the progress achieved has put us on the right azimuth to accomplish the objectives agreed upon at last November's Lisbon summit, specifically that of Afghan forces in the lead throughout the country by the end of 2014.

The achievements of 2010 and early 2011 have been enabled by a determined effort to get the inputs right in Afghanistan. With the strong support of the United States and the 47 other troop-contributing countries, ISAF has focused enormous attention and resources over the past 2 years on building the organizations needed to conduct a comprehensive civil-military counterinsurgency campaign, on staffing those organizations properly, on developing in close coordination with our Afghan partners the requisite concepts and plans, and above all on deploying the additional forces, civilians and funding needed.

Indeed, more than 87,000 additional NATO-ISAF troopers and 1,000 additional civilians have been added to the effort in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2009. And Afghanistan security forces have grown by over 122,000 in that time as well.

I would like to point out that the Swedish right wing - including far right Sweden Democrats - is all in for joining Nato, more arms to Ukraine and expanding the Swedish military forces. It is on the left that there is opposition.

While the rising electricity bills was a big topic in the election debate, the link to the war was rarely discussed, much less doing something about the war. Instead the focus was on direct support to the households and the plans of the right wing for more nuclear power.

I get that "right wing wins, amidst discontent with rising prices because of the war" easily leads to "right wing pro peace", but it isn't that simple.

Rightwing won't bring peace in a world in turmoil. The world has witnessed NATO construct from a European defense alliance to a global assault group as a proxy for the American empire.

By signing up to NATO will not offer any change for peace in Europe. The destruction
has been set in motion and no one knows how and when it will end. The Cold War has turned into a hot war for fossil fuel, grain (food) and commodities. Not long ago the "Left" protested against globalization. Under Trump and Biden US policy changed to isolationism and pure national interest ... the European continent will reverse in economic and "military" might. According to Chancellor Scholz, the 200 billion euros to curb energy costs will come from the credit-financed Economic Stabilization Fund (WSF). The fund originally served to stabilize the economy as a result of the corona pandemic. According to Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), the WSF crisis fund will only be able to use the 200 billion euros for a specific purpose . The money is not available for further demands from the federal states, says the FDP politician. The aim is to prevent a bursting of the spending dam.

Despite the abolition of the gas surcharge, VAT on the supply of gas is to be reduced as planned from October 1st . "The reduction in VAT (...) will be retained and will also be applied to district heating contracts," said Habeck. From October 1st to March 31st, 2024, the VAT on gas should only be 7 instead of 19 percent. According to Habeck, the funds to finance the reduction are not included in the 200 billion euros mentioned.

More fossil-free electricity here, less coal and oil there | Uniper |

The export of fossil-free electricity to other countries is not only beneficial to the inhabitants of Sweden, where the electricity is produced - our electricity exports also help to reduce emissions beyond Sweden's borders. Thanks to the high percentage of nuclear and hydropower, Sweden's electricity generation is virtually fossil-free and is priced competitively. The fact is that up to 98% of our electricity generation is fossil-free.

BALTOPS22 Maritime Exercise Concludes In Kiel on June 17, 2022

Gotland Island, Sweden served as a training ground for several air insertions and amphibious landings from the USS Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group-22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and Swedish counterparts.  Additionally, the exercise included complex personnel recovery training scenarios and a submarine rescue.

Unique to BALTOPS 22 was Sweden's role in hosting several training events, to include the training at Ravlunda. The entire exercise involved participation from 16 nations. The 14 NATO Ally and 2 partner nations provided over 45 ships, more than 75 aircraft, and 7,000 personnel.

The Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) with the embarked 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) concluded two successful training events with the Swedish Armed Forces and Standing NATO Maritime Group (SNMG) 1 while operating in the Baltic Sea, Sept. 4, 2022.

Lessons from Sweden's Sub Hunt | USNI - Oct. 28, 2014 |

The Swedish navy was pushed into its largest anti-submarine effort since the close of the Cold war last week.

For six days, it hunted for an unknown foreign submersible, likely from Russia, spotted several times off the coast close to the capital of Stockholm.

....
Called an intelligence gathering operation--the effort off the coast of Stockholm lasted for nearly a week and included surface combatants, helicopters, ground troops (to sweep the islands in the Stockholm archipelago)--and more than likely one or more of Sweden's air independent propulsion (AIP) attack submarines.

The mystery deepened when Sweden's largest daily, Svenska Dagbladet, reported that the Swedish signals intelligence agency had intercepted emergency communications between a transmitter off the coast of Sweden and Kaliningrad--the home of Russia's Baltic fleet--which suggested that the intruding submarine might be in distress.

A Russian merchant vessel, the NS Concord, circled just outside Swedish territorial waters throughout the operation, leading many to think that it was serving as a mother ship, and that the Swedish navy was tracking the scent of a Russian mini-submarine far inside Swedish waters.

It turns out that Russian submarine found off Sweden is ...

Swedish parliament backs center-right leader Ulf Kristersson as new PM | Politico |

The incoming government, which will be made up of the Moderates plus two other center-right parties, will be backed from outside by the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) after the new coalition vowed to adopt a raft of SD proposals, including tougher criminal sentencing and tighter border controls.

Opposition leaders in Monday's debate criticized the incoming government in stark terms.

Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar compared its ideas for law and order with the creation of a "moral police." Center Party leader Annie Lööf called the new influence of SD a "paradigm shift" which had "given the keys to the government offices to a xenophobic, nationalist party."

Translation:
We do not want to participate in letting through the government where the Sweden Democrats are the dominant force. The Center Party therefore votes no in today's prime ministerial vote. (3/3)

Russo-German gas deal irks Poland | BBC News - Apr. 30, 2006 |

Poland's defence minister has condemned a gas pipeline project which will link Russia and Germany via the Baltic Sea but bypass Poland.

Radek Sikorski reportedly compared the deal to a pre-World War II Nazi-Soviet pact dividing up Poland. He said the move by Germany raised questions about the feasibility of a common European foreign policy.

The $5bn (£2.7bn) pipeline, agreed in September 2005, will connect Babayevo in Russia to Greifswald in Germany. The 1,200km (744 mile) pipeline is now under construction and will deliver Russian gas to Germany - and eventually to other Western European nations - by 2010.

But it is set to bypass Poland, prompting concern in Warsaw that the new pipeline could be used to divert energy away from Poland for political purposes.

'Deals above our head'

Speaking at an international conference in Brussels, Mr Sikorski said the move by Germany did not bode well for plans for more integrated European Union cooperation on foreign and security affairs.

He said Germany should have consulted Poland before the deal. "Taking the decision first and consulting us later is not our idea of solidarity," he said. Poland was sensitive to "deals above our head", he said.

"That was the Locarno tradition, that was the Molotov-Ribbentrop tradition," he said, quoted by Reuters news agency, referring to a 1939 pact between Stalin and Hitler which divided Poland up between Russia and Germany.
