Minister rubbishes reports that senior government figures were revisiting trading arrangement offered by EU last year
Downing Street has sought to quell a backlash among hardline Brexiters after it was claimed the UK wanted to pursue closer ties with the European Union by adopting a Swiss-style relationship.
The suggestion was rubbished by a government spokesperson as well as a former Brexit secretary, who claimed doing so would renege on the freedoms gained in the aftermath of the 2016 referendum.
One senior Conservative said pushing for a Swiss-style deal amounted to “resurrecting the corpse” of Theresa May’s ill-fated Brexit deal, which was presented to cabinet ministers at Chequers but abandoned in the face of a cabinet rebellion.
There has been renewed focus on the effects of Brexit given that the UK is the only G7 country still lagging behind pre-pandemic growth levels, and the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has suggested that removing trade barriers would boost growth.
