Statewide Election Denier Roundup

From coast to coast, the Republican party has elevated candidates who peddle misinformation about elections, many who still believe former President Donald Trump's farcical notion that the 2020 election was stolen. Earlier this year, we highlighted several "Big Lie" candidates in secretary of state, governor and attorney general races. With the primary elections now complete, we can gain a fuller picture of the Republican party's embrace of election deniers.

A comprehensive analysis by FiveThirtyEight found that 60% of Americans will have an election denier on their ballot in November -- out of 552 Republican nominees, more than 200 fully denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election, with an additional 62 raising questions and doubts.

Battleground Pennsylvania a Mockery of Democracy

Voting Rights Advocates File to Intervene in Pennsylvania Mail-in Ballot Lawsuit | ACLU - Oct. 9, 2022 |

A coalition of voting rights advocates today filed a motion to intervene in Ball v. Chapman, the latest legal effort in the commonwealth to invalidate mail-in ballots that are missing a handwritten date on the return envelope. The ACLU of Pennsylvania and the American Civil Liberties Union are representing the Black Political Empowerment Project, League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, Common Cause Pennsylvania, NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference, Make the Road Pennsylvania, and POWER.

The groups represented by the ACLU are nonpartisan organizations committed to promoting democracy and ensuring eligible voters in the commonwealth are able to vote and have their votes counted. With 2022 voting already underway, the disqualification of mail-in ballots without a handwritten date on the return envelope would deeply impact the work of these organizations and could potentially disenfranchise thousands of Pennsylvania voters.

The lawsuit was filed just days after the U.S. Supreme Court vacated as moot the ACLU's victory in Migliori v. Lehigh County [1137 p.], in which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit ruled that the date on the return envelope is immaterial to voters' eligibility and, thus, under federal civil rights laws cannot be applied to disenfranchise voters. The Supreme Court's action did not reverse the decision but simply negated it as precedent; the dispute became moot before the Supreme Court had an opportunity to review it.

It's not an shellacking and no red "Trump" wave ... in that sense "democracy" stays on oxygen. There is a lot of ticket splitting, unusual. No statistical big midterm defeat for sitting president. Perhaps fear of the polls forecast GOTV and may have turned voters to rescue Blue.

Georgia, Pennsylvania and Nevada will decide the Senate majority. Republicans need two for a majority. Georgia may end in a run-off of neither candidates reach 50%.

If current numbers stand (looking at the Guardin website), democrats has the senate with 50 to 49 and Georgia in run-off. The House also looks very even.

I think US politics is in a new phase. Until 2016 it was common wisdom that the most liked candidate would win US presidential eections. In 2016, with two candidates more disliked than liked, the more disliked candidate won the electoral vote, though the less disliked won the popular vote.

I thought two disliked candidates would mean lower participation, but it meant higher. Dislike for the two parties has continued to increase, but so has participation.

So I would say today dislike drives participation, and new patterns emerge.

The question is how long the trend can last before the two party system starts coming apart. I noticed that the independent that won the republican primary in Vermont promised to caucus with neither Democrats or Republicans, if elected (unlikely that he will be though). Given the institutional obstacles to running third party, running in the a major party primary and declaring that you will caucus with neither may be a way to gain the votes of voters who dislike both parties.

Just a very rough analysis as I wasn't motivated to follow the campaign ...

The polls on statistical history once again failed to differentiate in voters, motivation, etc. The polls and first exit polls all indicated a red wave to advance Republican candidates. Both were wrong ... a last minute swing to Democrats likely because of disgust Republican candidates endorsed by Trump. I envisioned the senate seat in Georgia would have gone easily to the incumbent Democrat ... the sore loss in 2020 and distrust of counting votes may have played a role.

Some take-a-ways ...

  • Young voters stayed at home
  • Majority were in age category >45 years old
  • Both Trump and Biden had a poor effect to motivate their electorate. Probably where Obama campaigned, there was a good turnout.

The five swing states to Blue in 2020 stayed in the column of Democrats.

Most important issue (72%) of Republicans was inflation and the economy
For Democrats (74%) the most important issue was Roe v Wade

Once again, women swung to Democrats, white men overwhelmingly to Republicans.

On a national ticket, Trump would not provide gains for Republicans, he would suffer a loss by Biden again 😂 .... amazing. Time is up for Trump.

Republicans are making an inroad to the Latino vote in Texas and California. The Catholic culture and abortion plays a role.

Just hoping no gun violence erupts in the coming days ...

    Unbelievable ‼️

Failed redistricting = gerrymandering may be the cause of setback Democrats.

What Went Wrong with New York's Redistricting

The latest round of redistricting in New York State was a mess, with courts throwing out the maps passed by the legislature, followed by a rushed process to get court-drawn maps in place in time for a delayed primary. In the end, the maps adopted by the court are among the most competitive and politically balanced in the nation -- New York is one of only a handful of states where competition increased rather than decreased after redistricting. But the treatment of some communities, especially in New York City, and the lack of time to have a robust, participatory process for input on the new maps left many deeply dissatisfied. It wasn't supposed to be this way.

Liberal fundraisers actually put money behind Trump-endorsed candidates in GOP primaries all over the place to help them prevail so that Democrats could face them in the general election. It was transparently cynical and an abuse of our political process. But it worked like gangbusters.
