Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Farewell, ARGeezer

by Carrie Sun Jul 3rd, 2022 at 01:17:09 PM EST

Three weeks ago, ET old-timer (in more ways than one: he had been around for nearly 15 years, and he considered himself an old man already then) ARGeezer passed away.

Please use this as a memorial thread.

ARGeezer was one of two grumpy Americans on this site who put 'geezer' in their user name. His real name was Don Davis and he had been an engineer (I believe, sound engineer) in California. He decided to retire in Arkansas shortly before the post-2007 financial crisis. He spoke fondly of the Ozarks region where he grew up and retired to.

Don was always a radical and a progressive with a keen understanding of lefty politics and economics. His lived perspective and his knowledge of 20th century American history were always a valuable addition to any discussion on this site. In later years he had aligned quite clearly with the progressive/Bernie wing of the Democratic party. While he and I may not always have seen eye-to-eye on some issues, I feel like we learned a lot from each other over the years, and he will be missed. I would have loved to meet him had I taken an extended road trip around the US as I kept fantasising to do. The trip may yet take place, but sadly the meeting with Don won't.

Along with many of the site regulars he had largely migrated to Facebook where we kept in touch and discussed current affairs. But he continued to post the occasional diary here. Having been a "geezer" for over 15 years, his health was not always the best. At some point in the past decade he was at risk of losing both feet from a rare condition, which motivated him to provide a sharp critique of the US healthcare system. Recently he appears to have been battling lung cancer, though I didn't take notice of it until after his death - he may not have shared that he was sick. As recently as March he was still posting about US politics and economics on Facebook. Then in May I missed his wife's report that he had moved to hospice care. On June 10th, he passed away - peacefully, we're told.

Farewell, Don.

Very insightful with knowledge extended to Europe. Excellent and compassionate writer and a true community friend. Truly hoped he enjoyed the years in Arkansas and the Ozarks ... with true American spirit of being neighborly ...

I spend 10 years on the Missouri side of the Ozarks ... great memories.

Thanks for this informative post ... ARGeezer passed over to the happy hunting grounds. RIP

'till we meet again

A true humanitarian and online friend. He will be sadly missed for his sharp and insightful comments and diaries here and on Facebook. Like Migeru I often fantasise about a road trip to the USA and he would have been on my list to visit, health permitting. May he rest in peace.

I should add he was also a front pager here, although he rarely used the privilege.

I've been around this site since the beginning. I remember the fights on Kos that caused the various breakaway scoop sites, and quickly found this one to be the best by far.

I introduced Don, my father, to this site back in the day, and was rather surprised by how well he took to the site. We had a tacit understanding to keep our relationship quiet.

I don't post personal stuff on social media as a rule, though I now realize that ET should have been an exception. This is more than just a social media site, it's been a community, and my Dad was a part of it.

My condolences, Zwackus. I always looked forward to your father's comments and occasional diary. Personality and wit shows through here and he had plenty to give.

I can't remember was it you or Don who shared your relationship privately with me - I think it was him. He was very proud of you.

Have to say I can't ever recall a bunfight between the two of you either! You must have been raised in a very harmonious and respectful household!

Oh, wow, okay, you sure kept that quiet. I never would have guessed.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I agree with you in principle on keeping personal stuff out of online spaces. But in practice it's so hard to find like-minded people that I end up trying to build community online and, where possible as it was on ET, carrying that offline. We had a bunch of meetups in Paris back in the day, and I would still like to meet all my American ET friends some day.

I'm really sorry for your loss. ET at its height was really an impressive community and the discussions we had were certainly formative to the way I'm viewing the world now and Don was an important part of it.

I never would've guessed, honestly.  I'm so sorry Zwackus.

ARGeezer about his roots

To my knowledge, my most recent immigrant ancestors were the parents of my maternal great, great grandmother, America McInnes, who came over from Northern Ireland, Scots -Irish stock.  America was their first born here.  My paternal great, great grandmother was Cherokee and came over the Trail of Tears, but stopped in Arkansas.  My father used to joke that they didn't have enough sense to go on to Oklahoma, where the oil was.  English, Welch and Dutch round out the family tree.

Don and I kept up our conversation for some time, mostly on Facebook. ET was rather sporadic in publishing for awhile, so the FB thing was more topical.

Definitely one of the 'good guys' - no discounting of the good gals - just that we were older southern males, so, therefore, 'good guys'.

May be off subject, but Geezer in Paris was another 'good guy'. Guess I'm the geezer now...

Don't count me out ...

If Don was ARGeezer, I grew up north of the border so I would be MOGeezer ... I meet de age prerequisite born in '45.
