McCarthyism and Genocide of Palestinians

Blinken says gap remains between Israel's intent to protect civilians and results | Anadolu Agency |

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday that there remains a gap between Israel's intent to protect civilians and results on the ground in Gaza.

"We stand here almost a week into this campaign in the south, after the end of the humanitarian pause, it remains imperative that Israel put a premium on civilian protection," Blinken said during a news conference in Washington with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron.

"And there does remain a gap between exactly what I said when I was there, the intent to protect civilians, and the actual results that we're seeing on the ground," he said.

Blinken said the US is talking with the Israelis on a regular basis, including President Joe Biden's conversation Thursday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about protecting civilians.

"Israel has an obligation to do everything possible to put a premium on protecting civilians and maximizing humanitarian assistance," he said.

The remarks come as officials in Gaza said at least 17,177 people have died since Israel began its war in the coastal enclave in retaliation for Hamas' Oct. 7 cross-border attack.

The vast majority of those killed in Gaza -- about 70% -- have been women and children. More than 46,000 have been injured.

Biden, in call with Netanyahu, stresses "critical need to protect civilians" in besieged Gaza ...

Joe has vivid memories from his spearhead effort as VP to break the stalemate in peace process Israel with Palestine. Humiliating President Obama and disrespect for guest VP Joe Biden in Jerusalem - 2010. An embarrassment towards Palestine and the Arab World.

In Israel, Why Netanyahu Humiliated Biden | Brookings by Martin Indyk - 12 March 2010 |

What happened to Vice President Biden this week in Jerusalem was egregious but hardly new. Right-wing governments in Israel have regularly embarrassed high-level U.S. officials by making announcements about new settlement activity during or just after their visits. But it usually happens to secretaries of state. It infuriated James Baker, confounded Condoleezza Rice, and appalled Madeleine Albright.

When I served as Albright's ambassador in Israel, during Bibi Netanyahu's first term as prime minister, he announced a major extension to an existing West Bank settlement as she departed Israel after one of her efforts to move the peace process forward. When she heard the news, she called me on an open line and shouted: "You tell Bibi that he needs to stop worrying about his right wing and start worrying about the United States."

It was good advice, but it went unheeded. Antagonizing the Clinton administration eventually contributed to Netanyahu's downfall. Israeli voters punished him for mishandling the relationship with Israel's only true ally.

The second time around, one might have expected Netanyahu to be more circumspect about his relations with the Obama administration, especially because Israel is now so dependent on the United States to deal with the growing threat from Iran.

But three developments seem to have emboldened Netanyahu. First, Obama lost the Israeli public by convincing them--through his Cairo speech and customary cool--that he wanted to distance the United States from Israel in order to curry favor with the Arab World. For the first time, Netanyahu found himself in the unusual position of being more popular at home than the U.S. president (Clinton and Bush enjoyed 70-80 percent public approval ratings in Israel).

  • Money Laundering and Funding Illegal E-Jerusalem Settlements | 27 July 2009 |
  • The Shift: Congress embraces McCarthyism | Mondoweiss |

It's now generally understood that McCarthyism was a dark and shameful aspect of our history. Oppenheimer made $953 million at the U.S. box office this summer and the bulk of Christopher Nolan's film isn't about the bomb, but the Red Scare attacks that destroyed the physicist's reputation.

Political repression might get pilloried in films these days, but you can still hear the faint echo of the Wisconsin Senator's accusations in any number of policies being pushed throughout the country. One of the most glaring examples is the GOP's ongoing war on libraries.

However, that crusade is mainly waged by just one party. The war on Palestine activism that has emerged since October 7th is a bipartisan affair. Just look at what's happened in recent days.

Josh Gottheimer wants to shut down a panel on Palestine at Rutgers. Marco Rubio wants Biden staffers who signed a letter calling for a ceasefire investigated for "supporting pro-Hamas policies." The presidents of Harvard, MIT, and Penn were grilled on Capitol Hill by the House Education committee for not sufficiently cracking down on pro-Palestine students.

GOP Rep. Virginia Foxx said that the administrators were being given a chance to answer and "atone" for what went on at their schools. Harvard president Claudine Gay (who is the school's first black woman leader) received the most scorn.

    [...]

What she cares about is Israel and therefore she has a vested in pushing the lie that criticism of Israel is somehow anti-Jewish.

To that end, the House passed H.R. 894 this week, a resolution that falsely states anti-Zionism is antisemitism and attacks common protest chants like, "Palestine Will Be Free." 95 Democrats voted in favor of the bill. The final tally was 311-14, with 92 present votes from Democrats.

The only Republican to vote against the resolution was Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie. Here's the 13 Democrats who rejected it: Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, Gerald Connolly, Jesús Garcia, Raúl Grijalva, Pramila Jayapal, Summer Lee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Delia Ramirez, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.

The Terror Industry and Anti-Jihadism, Who Benefits? | Tikun Olam - 16 Sept. 2010 |

Norman Finkelstein coined the phrase the “Holocaust industry” in his book of the same name, to describe the nexus of Jewish groups, lawyers, politicians, and communal leaders who enrich their power and pocketbook by trumpeting the anti-Semitism threat and causing anxiety and paranoia among world Jewry as a result.  As a result of Finkelstein’s acute analysis, he’s earned outrage and scorn from those in the Jewish community who he has skewered.

For the past decade or more, since the 1990s demise of the Communist “menace” and its accompanying gravy train, neocons have turned to terror as their new bogeyman. A new Terror Industry has sprung up and it is populated with the usual retired generals (William Boykin), former government officials (John Bolton, Frank Gaffney), corporate opportunists (Aubrey Chernick), ideologues and intellectual heavy-lifters (Daniel Pipes, David Horowitz, Norman Podhoretz, Marty Peretz, Bill Kristol).  Just as the Jefferson’s tree of liberty needed to be fed with the blood of tyrants, so the Terror apparatus needs to be fed with new political fodder.

Such is the effort led by Jewish pro-Israel neocons to turn anti-jihadism into the Terror Industry’s new mantra.

The UN's press release was issued only a few days after The Nation published an article titled "The Harvard Law Review (HLR) Refused to Run This Piece About Genocide in Gaza." The piece it referenced, "The Ongoing Nakba: Towards a Legal Framework for Palestine," was written by Rabea Eghbariah, a human rights attorney completing his doctoral studies at Harvard Law School. The piece had already undergone several rounds of edits, according to The Nation and "would have been the first piece written by a Palestinian scholar for the law review."

In an email to Eghbariah, an editor at the HLR said that the choice to not publish the article was "an unprecedented decision" by the leadership of the publication, but as Tascha Shahriari-Parsa, the online editor for HLR, told Eghbariah, "the discussion did not involve any substantive or technical aspects" of the piece. "Rather," she said, "the discussion revolved around concerns about editors who might oppose or be offended by the piece, as well as concerns that the piece might provoke a reaction from members of the public who might in turn harass, dox, or otherwise attempt to intimidate our editors, staff and HLR leadership."

Donor 'appalled' by Penn's 'stance on antisemitism on campus' pulls $100 million | JNS |

Ross Stevens, founder and CEO of Stone Ridge Asset Management, notified the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday that he is withdrawing a donation of "units" in his business, worth about $100 million, that he gifted to the university.

In a letter to the university, his lawyers wrote that he was "appalled by the university's stance on antisemitism on campus."

"Its permissive approach to hate speech calling for violence against Jews and laissez-faire attitude toward harassment and discrimination against Jewish students would violate any policies or rules that prohibit harassment and discrimination based on religion, including those of Stone Ridge."

    [...]

"Mr. Stevens and Stone Ridge would welcome the opportunity to discuss this matter further and give the university a chance to remedy what Stone Ridge believes are likely violations of the limited partner agreement if, and when, there is a new university president in place," the letter stated.

The board of advisers of Penn's Wharton School, a business school, wrote to Magill, stating that "our board respectfully suggests to you and the board of trustees that the university requires new leadership with immediate effect."

'Unfathomable, horrific': Mourning the death of Refaat Alareer | Al Jazeera |

Sami Hermez of Northwestern University in Qatar tells Al Jazeera that Refaat Alareer was "someone who spoke to thousands".

Alareer, a poet, writer, professor and one of Gaza's most prominent academics, was killed in Israeli army strikes on southern Gaza.

"It's hard when you have 17,000 people [dead], and we are unable to follow the stories of each and every one of them. This one touches me because I'm also a professor and writer just like Dr Refaat," Hermez said.

"It's just unfathomable, horrific, brutal and so on, and we keep using these words, but nothing seems to capture it any more. I might as well just be silent."

Two days before being killed Refaat Alareer received a text message from the Israeli army telling him they knew where he was and that he was on their target list. He left the UNWRA school where he had sought shelter with his family and went to his sister's appartement. They hit this appartement on the 2nd floor, nothing else. This was a targeted killing!

In times of violence in the Middle East, don't carry anger to one's fellow citizens and neighbours in our country. Life time is too short and politicians with unlimited military power should cease the fighting as only they command soldiers. Save lives now!

Israel's onslaught drags U.S. Jewish life into the abyss | Mondoweiss |

It has been another horrifying week in Gaza, as our reporters have sought to document. It saw the murder of a great poet, Refaat Alareer, and his family, by the Israeli army. It saw the Israeli army stripping and humiliating scores of Palestinian men on the street of a bombed-out city- including, by our report, shopkeepers and journalists -- in scenes reminiscent of Abu Ghraib [and Bagram detention/torture and Guantanamo Bay] and the Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe. [PS I refuse any comparison to the Shoah or Nazi crimes WWII - Oui]

It saw the U.S. defying the world to veto a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire -- and the U.S. resupplying Israel with tank shells .

And here in America, the Jewish establishment has been consigned to the role of supporting genocide, and it has accepted that role eagerly in all its expressions and activities. The effect on Judaism of this moral collapse is unfathomable. Young Jews will save the religion; but the tragedy is sure to envelop my people for decades, and produce great suffering in Israel, Palestine, and the U.S. too.

I'm talking about the unanimity of official Jewish life. Tony Blinken -- who became secretary of state by invoking his [step]father's surviving the Holocaust [Samuel Pisar] -- is today a shell of a man. Look at him on CNN. He has stood up again and again for Israeli massacres, while saying that he has asked Israel to do better- pretty please. These performances at the gates of hell will haunt him, just like Colin Powell lying at the U.N. to enable the destruction of Iraq.

Holocaust Survivor Calls for Peace Beyond a Ceasefire, Condemns Israeli Assault | Truthout - 8 Nov. 2023 |

We speak with 87-year-old Holocaust survivor Marione Ingram, who has been protesting outside the White House calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Ingram says experiencing anti-Jewish hate, losing family members to the Nazi killing machine and surviving the Allied bombing of Hamburg as a child all inspire her to speak out for peace. "What Israel is doing will not end this conflict. It will only exacerbate it," says Ingram. She calls the vote to censure Palestinian American Congressmember Rashida Tlaib "shameful" and describes her as a "hero."

We also hear from leading Holocaust scholar Omer Bartov, who recently signed an open letter warning of the potential for genocide in Israel's assault on Gaza. "The refusal of the Israeli government to find any kind of compromise with the Palestinians ... is what led and keeps leading to this ongoing and increasingly violent confrontation between Israel and the Palestinians," says Bartov.

Torture Victims Lead Call for Torture Apologists Avril Haines and Mike Morell Not to be Confirmed as Director of National Intelligence and CIA Director | 22 Dec. 2020 |

Both Morell and Haynes have a troubling history of defending torture. Morell, who was a CIA analyst under George W. Bush, and Deputy and Acting CIA Director under Barack Obama, defended the use of torture when speaking to VICE in 2015. "I don't like calling it torture for one simple reason: to call it torture says my guys were torturers," he said, adding, "I'm gonna defend my guys till my last breath." As Medea Benjamin and Marcy Winograd explained in an article for Common Dreams yesterday, Morell "put his CIA buddies above truth, the law and basic decency."

Hopefully, as they also noted, "Morell's traction may be on the wane with the Biden administration ... after progressives launched a campaign against [him], and Senator Ron Wyden -- a powerful Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee -- called him a `torture apologist' and said his appointment to head the CIA was a `non starter.'"

    G W F and McCarthyism In A Digital Age - Part 2 | 1 Feb. 2018 |

A sad period in US politics when Hamilton Federalists have become allies of the Clinton Democratic party ... FDR turning in his grave!

The foreign policy establishment is realigning itself in anticipation, and support, of a Hillary Clinton administration. With Donald Trump self-destructing at last, this process involves a rightwing-center solidification upon the belief that Russia is the new American enemy in the Middle East. A couple of Clinton endorsers have all but called for war with Russia and Iran, one of them saying the U.S. should be killing Russians in Syria.

It was obvious the Russians would make use of asymmetric warfare after the EU/NATO coup d'état in the 2013-2014 Ukraine campaign which led to regime change and ousting of elected president Yanukovich.

Led by the British, NATO took early offensive measures ...
