Yom Kippur and Genocide

by Oui Sat Oct 12th, 2024 at 10:45:13 AM EST

Let's make something clear from the start: Jews don't have to apologize for Israel's sins.  Israelis must do that.  But because I am a Jew, I cherish its traditions, and because Zionism lays claim to all Jews-I am dedicating this post to Yom Kippur. [source: Richard Silverstein]

Yom Kippur: Atoning for Genocide

On this Day of Days, Jews say several moving prayers which resonate in this Time of Suffering. The first is the Ashamnu ("We have sinned"). In this confessional prayer, the worshiper speaks not in the first person singular, but first person plural. Not "I have sinned," but "we have sinned." The congregation as a community, the Jewish people as a whole, have sinned and must repent not as an individual, but as a body. This is especially relevant in the context of the terrible sins Israel is committing on this holy day and so many others. The original is to the left and my own version addressing the Gaza genocide is to the right ...

I have written this many times over the past year: the Jewish God does not commit genocide. He does not relish the death of his creatures.  He recoils at those who torture in His name.  Those who commit such crimes defile His name, and forfeit the right to call themselves Jews. That is why Jews and Judaism (at least in the Diaspora) must divorce themselves from Israel and Zionism.  We cannot allow ourselves to be implicated in the sins (or if you prefer, "crimes") of Zionism.

Joe Biden you can't hide ... history will place you alongside the likes of Bibi Netanyahu, Ariel Sharon, Menachem Begin ... fifty years supporting US policy of a cult of death squads, assassinations and overthrowing leaders of sovereign states in violation of the UN Charter and Humanitarian Law.

From the diaries many years past ...

This week thousands marched and protested throughout the United States to mark one year of devastation and horror in Gaza.

Many of those involved have been organizing and agitating to stop the genocide since last October. Chanting, holding signs, blocking traffic, confronting politicians, standing outside the entrances to corporations that are profiting off Israeli war crimes, holding sit-ins at congressional offices, pitching tents on their campuses, holding teach-ins, and interrupting the speeches of those who support Israel's brutality.

Spain's Sanchez Urges Other EU Members to Suspend Free Trade Agreement with Israel

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged other EU members to respond to Madrid and Dublin's call and suspend Brussels' free trade agreement with Tel Aviv over its ongoing aggression against the Palestinian and Lebanese people.

"The European Commission must respond once and for all to the formal request made by two European countries to suspend the association agreement with Israel if it is found, as everything suggests, that human rights are being violated," Sanchez said at an event in Barcelona.

The call from Sanchez adds to growing dissonance among member countries on what stance the EU should take on its trade ties with the Israeli regime. While Spain, Ireland, and Belgium want to suspend the agreement and mount pressure on Tel Aviv through trade sanctions, countries such as Finland, Austria, and Germany are more hesitant.

Last Friday, the Spanish premier called on the international community to stop all arms and ammunitions exports to the zionist occupied lands, following intensified Israeli strikes on Lebanon.

On Saturday, 40 out of the 50 countries contributing troops to the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL) condemned recent attacks on the international mission serving under the aegis of the UN and called for an investigation into the Israeli forces' tank fire on UNIFIL headquarters and its stations along the border in Southern Lebanon.

Active but Acquiescent: the EU's Response to the Israeli Military Offensive in the Gaza Strip

In view of the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip between 27 December 2008 and 18 January 2009, that took place following the collapse of the six-month ceasefire and which caused an unprecedented level of death and destruction, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) has set out to examine the policies of the European Union (EU) towards the conflict. In view of the focus on the EU's response as a main human rights player on the international scene, this report is mainly concerned with the role and reaction of the EU and its member states rather than of other local or international players in the conflict.

For the same reason, because of the EU's relations with only one actor in the conflict, including binding human rights obligations in its bilateral relations - Israel - and its lack of contact with the other - Hamas - most of the analysis is centred on Israel's conduct and on the EU's reaction to it, although the report briefly discusses Hamas' violations and analyses the EU's response to these as well.

While focusing on the EU's reactions in the run-up to, the evolution and aftermath of "Operation Cast Lead", this report begins by setting the wider political, legal and policy context in which the EU's reactions are constructed and pursued. It outlines the EU's declared political aims in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the human rights and international humanitarian law obligations and commitments of the EU and its member states, as well as the policy instruments the Union has at its disposal.

The report then analyses the manner in which the EU has deployed its policies, particularly since 2006, when Hamas won the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) elections, arguing that the Union, nolens volens, was part of a wider international context within which the escalation took place.
