Early Warning Signs of Fascism in West

by Oui Fri Oct 25th, 2024 at 12:50:14 PM EST

See my earlier diaries making the right call on fascism inside the United States of America as progressive bloggers believe neo-fascism originates in evil Russia. The European Union proves otherwise.

THE EU AND THE WARNING SIGNS OF FASCISM

Extremist rightwing terror more prevalent in the West than either Al Qaeda or Islamic State terror attacks. The Untied States and UK have used both groups as proxies to fight its foreign wars as mercenaries to the present day ... ask Erdogan in Türkiye.

The EU and the Warning Signs of Fascism | Mint Press - 12 Dec. 2018 |

Things are spiraling out of control in Europe, faster than many predicted. Outside of Brexit, there is a strong anti-EU feeling in Hungary, Spain, Italy, Greece and France. The EU is in danger of crumbling, and people afraid of losing power are prone to extreme acts of dictatorial control.
How long before the EU truly becomes the authoritarian force that people from both ends of the political spectrum have always feared?

THE EU DEFENCE FORCE

Earlier this year, the EU voted to "punish" one of its own members, Hungary, for the internal policies of its elected government. To be clear about this - whatever you think of Viktor Orban, he was elected by the people of Hungary. He is their legally recognised democratic leader. Hungary voted for him - in contrast, Hungary did NOT vote for any of the 448 MEPs who supported the motion, posed by Dutch MEP Judith Sargentini, that:

The Hungarian people deserve better...They deserve freedom of speech, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice and equality, all of which are enshrined in the European treaties."

Note that "democracy" is not included on that list. "Tolerance", "justice" and "equality", but not democracy. A Freudian slip, perhaps.

The European Parliament vote was, itself, a corrupt nonsense - one in which abstentions were disregarded so the 2/3rds majority could be reached. Forcing through a bill that, essentially, calls for a change of regime in Hungary via:

.. appropriate measures to restore inclusive democracy, the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights in Hungary"

One suggested punishment - "The Nuclear Option" - is a loss of voting rights. Hungary would still be a member of the EU, would still have to pay into the EU, would still have to obey all EU laws and regulations, but would no longer have a say in what those laws were.

SCOTUS Grants the Executive Dictatorial Powers

The Bi-Partisan Enabling of Presidential Power:
A Review of David Driesen's The Specter of Dictatorship: Judicial Enabling of Presidential Power (2021)

"That same cloud-capt, fire-breathing Spectre of Democracy; incalculable, which is enveloping the world!"

Thus Thomas Carlyle, in his famous three volumes on The French Revolution in 1837, described the death of King Louis XV, a "hollow phantasmagory," a foreshadowing of a world turned upside down. Carlyle was ambivalent about the revolution, but many of his nineteenth-century readers feared populist chaos. In America, Andrew Jackson had just finished his second term. Many Americans celebrated his populism; many loathed his demagoguery. In the same year, Queen Victoria began her reign, notable for its stability, by contrast to the revolutions that soon would sweep Europe in the 1840s.

Just as in 1789 and in 1837, today we are haunted by similar polarizing fears. The left fears the specter of dictatorship, as David Driesen titled his book. The right fears the specter of sans-culottes democracy and its Reign of Terror. Ironically, conservative scholars and judges have turned from democratic "specter" to royal "scepter": they have embraced a monarchist unitary model for the presidency, ostensibly as originalism, but it is really just cherry-picking from Blackstone and the English crown (even from Mad King George III).

This review will summarize some recent unitary originalism scholarship that turn out to be royalism, not originalism.

Beyond Religious Tolerance

What has become of the progressive blog community in the “Free World” …

Posted in FrontPage article

There’s an issue I feel we are all dodging right now and we need to confront.

Multi ethnic/cultural/religious democracy does not work. In fact it cannot work. Human nature is what it is. Which means roughly 40% of the population is biologically not capable of living in a society where other religions and cultures exist. It causes them intense psychological and emotional stress and pain. Which means there is no way to actually deal with issues related to the economy, class, foreign policy, science, climate, or rights unless there is a strict mono culture.

The moment you have a multi cultural/religious/ethnic society you must toss out democracy. Because then the race is on to either a right wing fascist authoritarian society or a left wing authoritarian society. There is no happy ending.

“The West” is imploding because immigration, loss of Christian dominance, and advancement of rights for non Christians hit that critical point. So democracy and freedom are no longer on the table. We are in a cold civil war and one side is going to win. It will be the first to setup a brutal authoritarian regime to enforce their world view and stomp out the cultural, religion, values, and rights of the other side. There is no way to avoid this now.

David Frum called this years ago. If conservatives can’t win democratically they won’t give up conservatism they will give up democracy. From Leonard Leo to The Heritage Foundation to SCOTUS they are all in a religious civil war. Either we are getting wiped out and our view points criminalized with jail or they are. We cannot vote our way out of this, debate our way out of this, or anything like that. Someone is going into camps and prisons for speaking and existing and it is us or them.

That’s the reality we need to face. The other reality as that as a capitalist society the fastest way to obliterate the other side and make sure we aren’t the ones in the camp is to give the uber wealthy everything they want. We are getting an autocracy and an oligarchy no matter what our diversity has sealed that fate. The questions is who gets to keep their culture and social values and who is dead or in camps. Choose now. Because choosing not to go after them and be even more brutal than they are is loading yourselves onto the trains. And yes, stopping this also means de-christianization through both legal and violent means.

I’ve been all over the world due to work and I know exactly where we are. It’s over. Even if Harris wins if we don’t race to crush them eventually they will win and they will wipe us out.

Preaching intolerance and Civil War … these guys haven’t got a clue. Living in an ultra-violent bubble where fear is the norm. As I predicted half a century ago … the “empire” crumbles, or rather implodes.

Anthropological Race Classification of Europeans 1839-1939

Fascism is often regarded as the almost unavoidable consequence of the radicalization of European nationalisms; or simply as a 20th century outcome of a 19th-century form of ethnic nationalism that became increasingly chauvinistic and xenophobic.

Historians of fascism were not the first to point this out. Some of the first historians of nationalism in the 1930s, and particularly during the 1940s, established a typology of the idea of nation and the development of nationalism in Europe that was strongly influenced by what they had observed in the evolution of contemporary fascist movements on the Old Continent.

Fascism was thus seen as the result of a form of nationalism that contained the ’seeds’ of conflict and exclusion from its very inception. What would later be considered a well-established scholarly distinction between the ethnic ’Eastern European’ and the civic ’Western European’ versions of nationalism, was elaborated in the turmoil of war and destruction provoked by fascism itself.

Decline of American capitalism absent social safety net as in EU social-democracies

Shrinking capitalism: components of a new political economy paradigm | 8 Nov 2021 |

The climate emergency, rising inequality, and pandemic diffusion have raised the question: for what purpose is capitalism fit? Implementing new policies and institutions to meet these challenges will require a realignment of political forces on a scale similar to that achieved by neoliberal policies and ideas over the past four decades. We suggest that a successful new paradigm must provide the basis of a dynamic and sustainable economy and be constituted by a synergistic set of ethical commitments, economic models, emblematic policies, and a new vernacular economics by which people understand and seek to improve their livelihoods and futures. We illustrate these four components by reference to the classical liberal, Keynesian-social democratic, and neoliberal paradigms. Using an expanded space for policies and institutions that integrates markets, states, and civil society, we propose elements of a new paradigm, including diminished space for capitalism and greater equality not only of economic endowments but also of dignity and voice.

European countries have been under pressure to get more involved in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Anti-Muslim sentiment sees alarming surge in Europe: Report TRT World |

EU Agency for Fundamental Rights report highlights a sharp increase in anti-Muslim sentiment, with 47 percent of Muslim respondents reporting racial discrimination, up from 39 percent in 2016.

THANK YOU AMERICA - MAGA FROM DONALD AND JOE

Nearly half of Muslims living in Europe face racism and discrimination in their daily lives, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has said in a report.
The report Being Muslim in the EU, released on Thursday and based on 2022 data, highlighted a sharp increase in anti-Muslim sentiment, with 47 percent of Muslim respondents reporting racial discrimination, up from 39 percent in 2016.

The survey shed light on the increasing challenges faced by Muslims across the EU, particularly in employment and housing.

"Muslims most often face discrimination when looking for work (39 percent) or in the workplace (35 percent)," it said.

It underscored that these issues have ripple effects in other areas, such as housing, education, and health care.

CROSSROADS XENOPHOBIA - ISLAMOPHOBIA - GENOCIDE

Muslims in the European Union: Discrimination and Islamophobia | DW News - 18 Dec 2006 |

The report by the Vienna-based organization said European Muslims were "over-represented in low-paying sectors of the economy," living in poor housing conditions, with below-average education leading to low-skilled jobs or unemployment.

"Many European Muslims, particularly young people, face barriers to their social advancement," the report said. "This could give rise to a feeling of hopelessness and social exclusion."

The EUMC, which is to become the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights in 2007, cited incidents "ranging from verbal abuse to physical attacks and arson" but added that little data was available on them as most EU countries do not report suspected racial or religious motivation behind many crimes.

Trump holds bombastic, incendiary homecoming rally at Madison Square Garden | LA Times |

In foreboding remarks reminiscent of his 2017 inauguration speech, Trump described a nation in dire straits, overrun by criminals, and also warned of harrowing consequences if he loses.

He also lashed out at former top military advisors who worked closely with him in the White House and have since spoken out about his leadership and demeanor -- retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis, who served as Trump's Defense secretary, and retired Army Gen. Mark Milley who served as his chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He described them as "weak" and "stupid" days after retired Marine Gen. John F. Kelly, Trump's longest-serving White House chief of staff, warned that Trump would govern like a dictator if elected in November.

Trump spoke after a long list of acolytes during the rally, which lasted about six hours and included a number of racist comments.

'Let's party like it's 1933': Inside the alt-right world of Richard B. Spencer | WaPo - 22 Nov. 2016 |

Richard Bertrand Spencer had just told his guests how inspired he was by their presence when the rising sound of fury outside the dining room's double doors reached his ears. He knew what it meant.

Spencer stepped into the open hallway and, there, beneath the wooden second-floor railing at Maggiano's Little Italy in Northwest Washington, more than 30 protesters were marching up the stairway toward him. Several held posters -- "No to Racism and Fascism" -- and blew whistles. "No Nazis! No KKK! No fascist USA!" they shouted, their voices intensifying as he came into view.

Ten feet from the top of the stairs, a Maggiano's employee -- a black man in a light-blue button-down and red tie -- spread his arms wide, blocking the mob from reaching the 100 or so white nationalists who had gathered at the restaurant Friday for a private dinner. Spencer walked behind him and looked down at the activists. Then the man who had coined the term "alt-right" grinned and waved.

Despite a long background in far-right radicalism, youthful Taylor Rose's campaign enjoys deep and broad support within the state's GOP | SPLC - 10 Oct 2016 |

Taylor Rose also authored a book in 2012 titled Return of the Right: How the Political Right Is Taking Back Western Civilization, which argued that Western humanists are attempting to impose a "vision to destroy the nation-state, eliminate religion, break down all defined barriers in society (such as family) and eliminate western civilization from the face of the earth in the attempt to institute a radical, multicultural, New World Order agenda." In the book, Rose argued that this nefarious plot is failing because "the Western world is coming to realize the complete emptiness and harm of belief systems that are at their core, nihilistic."

The neo-Confederate hate group the League of the South interviewed Rose about the book when it came out. During the interview, Rose continued to warn of the evil nature of "the Left" and predicted that a white nationalist Right would soon rise to the fore in global politics. "You will first see the Right-Wing act as a great power of political influence, mainly upon the center-right, by reorienting the ideas of the center-right to reform immigration policy and take a more hard-line anti-Socialist stance."

Wooing MAGA Billionaires, Fascist Felon Trump holds a Fire Sale on his Potential Presidency | Informed Comment |

At the dawn of Nazi Germany a few weeks after Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor, Reichstag president Hermann Göring invited two dozen of Germany's wealthiest and most influential bankers and industrialists to his home to solicit funds for the upcoming election, according to historian David de Jong in Nazi Billionaires.

Among them were owners of Germany's largest corporations, some of whose names are familiar to us even today - Siemens, Krupp, Allianz, and defunct chemical manufacturer and Zyklon B poison gas supplier IG Farben, an antecedent of pharma giant Bayer.

Nazi Billionaires: The Dark History of Germany's Wealthiest Dynasties

Few entrepreneurs paid attention to Hitler until he grew powerful after 1930. Some became ardent Nazis, but most approved of his hatred of socialism, worker activism, and democracy. Once Hitler began rearming, they scrambled for contracts, which involved currying favour with Nazi leaders. An enormous source of profit was Jewish businesses, often acquired for a pittance. Readers searching for an industrialist who disapproved will come up empty. As de Jong shows, nearly everyone approved of the methods of the business community. Orders increased, and a flood of slave labourers from the conquered countries poured into the factories.

Trump appointed three justices in his first term -- more than any president since Ronald Reagan. And thanks to them, Trump was able to get rid of Roe v. Wade, affirmative action, and gun safety laws -- even after he left office.

If Trump is re-elected, 76-year-old Justice Clarence Thomas and 74-year-old Justice Samuel Alito could retire, giving Trump a chance to appoint a fourth and fifth justice. That's five out of nine justices. Trump would be the first president in more than a half century to appoint a majority of the Supreme Court.

And not just a "conservative" majority -- but a MAGA majority  that would work in lockstep with an authoritarian president.

The Super-Rich have a long history of Backing Fascism and Buying the White House: It is Happening Again | Informed Comment |

Musk -- owner of SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter/X -- had already endorsed the Tyrant and helped fuel his alternative reality, based on lies and fear. Throughout 2024, he amplified Trump's xenophobia and election paranoia with a steady drumbeat of conspiracy theories and disinformation. Messaging his 202 million followers, Musk stoked panic about Haitian immigrants and spread debunked claims that FEMA failed to help victims of hurricane Helene and spent the money instead on migrants.

Regarding the election, Musk asserted that "if Trump is NOT elected, this will be the last election" and wove that lie into a false narrative about the "great replacement" conspiracy theory. He posted a vile, toxic, hate video that purports to lay bare the vast conspiracy: Democrats are expediting the conversion of "illegals" to citizens in an attempt to make America a "one-party state."

Musk amplifies radical right propaganda to the masses that might otherwise languish in the darkest corners of the internet.

With his promotion of fascist fabrications, Musk channels Model-T owner and Hitler-apologist Henry Ford. In 1918 plutocrat Ford, who had just lost a Senate race, purchased a newspaper The Dearborn Independent -- the 20th century equivalent to Twitter/X. Convinced that victory had been stolen from him, Ford bought a platform for his self-promoting populist message, unfiltered by media sceptics and naysayers.

Elon Musk is a self-entitled child of apartheid South Africa

Musk's father, Errol Musk, had reaped the benefits of South Africa's notorious mining industry, which placed profits far ahead of miners' safety, whether the mines, which employed blacks in the most dangerous jobs, were located in South Africa, Southwest Africa, or Botswana. In the case of Errol, he bought an emerald mine near Lake Tanganyika in Zambia in the 1980s and made a fortune for his family. The Musks, including Elon, lived in Waterkloof, a well-heeled suburb of Pretoria. The Pretoria home was one of several possessed by Errol, who also owned a yacht, thoroughbred horses, and a Cessna airplane.

In the South Africa of Elon Musk's youth, the apartheid government had banned homosexuality, abortion, prostitution, gambling, pornography, sex education, and blacks in the major cities and towns after sunset. Television was not available until 1976, when Elon was 5 years old. The government strictly enforced Sunday "blue laws," especially when it came to the selling of alcohol or movie theaters, which were closed. What was plentiful in Elon's youth were guns and plenty of them. The gun was considered a part of Afrikaaner culture, which saw any others as a threat: blacks and Englishmen to the predatory animals of the Veldt grasslands of the country.

Elon Musk's friendship and partnership with Peter Thiel, the notorious Donald Trump-supporting co-developer along with Musk of PayPal, does not bode well for democracy or racial justice. Thiel, born in Frankfurt, Germany, founded Palantir, one of the most intrusive deep data mining operations in the world today. Thiel, like Musk, is an ardent right-wing libertarian. Thiel is also heavily invested in Facebook. Thiel, who is openly gay, resigned in February from the board of Meta, Facebook's corporate parent, to assist pro-Trump candidates win in 2022 Republican primaries and the November mid-term election. There is a belief among some Wall Street experts a sizable chunk of Musk's $44 billion for Twitter came from Thiel's venture capital network and that Thiel, a former derivatives trader for Credit Suisse will have "silent partner" influence over Twitter after Musk takes it private.

A post to my diary by Zwackus ...

Re: Stop Blaming Outside Forces For Our Ills (4.00 / 4)

Being filled with deep seated self-destructive impulses as I am, I remain a regular reader of Daily Kos. I have to agree, the obsession with Russia is bizarre. Were they involved in some shady stuff? Yes, surely. Were they propping up Trump's early campaign? Yes, surely. Do they have a bunch of annoying trolls hell-bent on destroying any chance of rational online discourse? Yes, but they're one of many.

All that stuff is bad ... but it didn't win the election for Trump. I've yet to see strong evidence to the effect that the various illegal ads actually pushed the needle anywhere -- just because people saw a thing online doesn't mean much, or I'd have a closetful of clothes appropriate for a young Asian woman. Online advertisers remain fundamentally confused about my demographic identity.

Trump rode white racist resentment to victory, and he's stoked the flames of white nationalism ever since. It's convenient to blame it on Russia, but Russia is a third-order factor at best. The real problem is that an electoral majority of America is spiteful and insane. The real problem is that an electoral majority of America thinks a fascist dictatoryship would be great, and will volunteer for death squads in a heartbeat.

Re: Stop Blaming Outside Forces For Our Ills (4.00 / 2)

Historically, DKos has had a collection of "old Russia hands" who mercilessly harass anyone who crosses them. That could be part of it. And they went full Hilbot in 2016 and need an excuse.

Glad I wasn't the only one and got downrated by the new crowd @BooMan in 2018 on forward.

Stop Blaming Outside Forces For Our Ills

Perhaps I'm just from an older generation who experienced the Cold War rhetoric and propaganda and misinformation of all sides. The fall of the Iron Wall (ehh .. Curtain 😉) separating East and West gave many hope. The turn of events spurned by 9/11 brought war across the globe and a new role for NATO. That wasn't change for good. An expansive NATO brought US a New Cold War with the Russian Federal Republic.

The advances in Internet technology and the role of social media brings intrusion into our private lives, manipulation and political propaganda. The principles of Democracy and the U.S. Constitution have been undermined. The role of the United Nations to bring peace has been minimized.

[...]

During the Cold War era, the CIA overrated the might of the Soviet Union in terms of its economy and military power. This was not unintentional as U.S. Congress kept funds growing for the Intelligence community and the military leadership in the Pentagon.

Recent reports released after FOIA requests makes clear nothing has changed in the American 21st Century.

Believe me, it's an Inside Job of the Right-wing machine funded by the very rich Americans, a policy rooted in the days of Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater. Don't put blame on Russia, Ukraine or Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump backfire | Politico - 11 Jan 2017 |

Merkel, who has served as an election observer in Ukrainian presidential elections dating back to 1993, noted there's some irony in Ukraine and Russia taking opposite sides in the 2016 presidential race, given that past Ukrainian elections were widely viewed in Washington's foreign policy community as proxy wars between the U.S. and Russia.

"Now, it seems that a U.S. election may have been seen as a surrogate battle by those in Kiev and Moscow," Merkel said.
