A second wave of Israeli strikes on Iran now happening near capital Tehran.
In Washington, White House National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett said the “targeted strikes on military targets” are “an exercise of self-defense and in response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack against Israel on October 1.”
The United States was “informed beforehand and there is no US involvement,” a US defense official told AFP, under the condition of anonymity.
The official did not say how far in advance the United States had been informed or what had been shared by Israel.

The White House has said that Israel’s overnight strikes on Iran should end direct exchanges of fire between the two countries, while also warning Tehran of “consequences” should it respond.
A senior White House official said the Biden administration believed the Israeli operation should “close out” the direct military exchange between Israel and Iran.
US President Joe Biden was updated as the Israeli operation was developing and as the attacks were carried out by the Israelis, the official said.
The official, who briefed reporters on the condition of anonymity, said the US had no involvement in the strike.
