German government descends into crisis mode | DW News |

However, a veto was apparently not enough for Lindner. In an 18-page policy paper, he called for a change of direction in the economy. The paper reads like a policy election campaign program for the FDP, which has been underperforming dramatically in opinion polls and recent regional elections.

Lindner calls for far-reaching tax relief for companies and top earners. He wants to scrap ambitious climate protection targets and reduce welfare.

These positions are unacceptable to the SPD and the Greens and contradict the coalition agreement. This is why Lindner's partners in government are speaking of a provocation and are wondering whether Lindner's intention is to be kicked out of the coalition hoping this move would give him enough credit with conservative voters to boost the FDP beyond the five percent threshold for representation in parliament.

The popularity ratings of the coalition government have hit rock bottom.  The outlook is grim for the three parties, but for the FDP it is now a matter of survival.

Polish and German authorities dismantle extremist militant group of "Saxon Separatists" | Polska Radio |

The operation involved officers from Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW), who identified the group's leader as 23-year-old German national, Jörge S. He faces charges of establishing and participating in a terrorist organization considered a "militant neo-Nazi right-wing extremist group."

Authorities report that the group's objective was to overthrow Germany's socio-political system through violence, with plans to establish an independent state in Eastern Germany adhering to Nazi ideology.

The cross-border operation spanned Germany, Austria, and Poland, involving searches of approximately 20 locations and the deployment of 500 police officers.

Gavin Newsom's quest to 'Trump-proof' California enrages incoming president | Politico |

Newsom and prominent Democrats in Sacramento have vowed the Golden State will once again lead the resistance to Trump's policies -- reviving its role from the first Trump era. During that time, state officials filed more than 120 lawsuits challenging the Republican administration's actions and passed a sweeping law limiting local authorities' cooperation with federal immigration officials.

"The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack -- and we won't sit idle," Newsom said Thursday, in a statement announcing the special session. The governor was a central surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris and is considered a likely contender for president in 2028.

The special session will start in Sacramento on Dec. 2, when lawmakers were scheduled to return to the state Capitol to swear in new members and prepare for next year's session.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba floated the idea of an "Asian NATO" to deter the increasing aggressiveness of China in the Asia-Pacific region.

NATO's Indo-Pacific Aspirations

With China, North Korea, and Russia moving into closer alignment, members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have concluded that European and Indo-Pacific security are not divisible. China's provision of dual-use items to Russia has provided a vital lifeline to its defense industrial base, while North Korea's shipment of munitions and ballistic missiles has helped Russia replenish its weapons stocks.

Countries in the Indo-Pacific are thus enabling Russia to prosecute the largest war in Europe since World War II.

These dynamics will, in turn, affect Indo-Pacific security. In exchange for the support it has received, Russia will likely provide technical assistance to North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, closely back Beijing and Pyongyang's positions on the main geopolitical fault lines in Asia, and may even intervene directly on behalf of its partners during a contingency.

NATO is strengthening dialogue and cooperation with its partners in the Indo-Pacific region - Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and New Zealand

Extreme Weather has already cost Vulnerable Island Nations $141 Billion

Two years ago, when the curtain fell on the COP27 summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, developing nations on the frontline of climate change had something meaningful to celebrate.

The creation of a new fund for responding to loss and damage was agreed after a hard-fought diplomatic effort, spearheaded by a group of small island developing states (sometimes known as the Sids). The fund would provide much needed support for climate-vulnerable nations faced with a spiralling human and financial toll from sea-level rise, extreme temperatures, droughts, wildfires, and intensifying floods and storms.

Yet two years on, the world's wealthiest nations - also the largest carbon emitters - are still dragging their feet. They've not followed up their pledges with anywhere near the finance required.

Some nations, particularly the 39 Sids, which include places like Barbados, Grenada, Fiji and Vanuatu, are uniquely vulnerable to climate change and are already paying the price.

China megaport opens up Latin America as wary US looks on | BBC News |

Xi was in Peru for the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation Forum (Apec). But all eyes were on Chancay and what it says about China's growing assertiveness in a region that the US has traditionally seen as its sphere of influence.

As seasoned observers see it, Washington is now paying the price for years of indifference towards its neighbours and their needs.

"The US has been absent from Latin America for so long, and China has moved in so rapidly, that things have really reconfigured in the past decade," says Monica de Bolle, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Peruvian President Dina Boluarte on 14 November

Even before it opened, the $3.5bn (£2.75bn) project, masterminded by China's state-owned Cosco Shipping, had already turned a once-sleepy Peruvian fishing town into a logistical powerhouse set to transform the country's economy.

China's official Communist Party newspaper, the People's Daily, called it "a vindication of China-Peru win-win co-operation".

Peru's President Dina Boluarte was similarly enthusiastic, describing the megaport as a "nerve centre" that would provide "a point of connection to access the gigantic Asian market".

But the implications go far beyond the fortunes of one small Andean nation. Once Chancay is fully up and running, goods from Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and even Brazil are expected to pass through it on their way to Shanghai and other Asian ports.

It is expected to generate $4.5 billion in annual revenue for Peru and directly create more than 8,000 jobs.

The completion of Chancay Port will enable Peru to put in place a multidimensional, diverse and efficient network of connectivity spanning from coast to inland, from Peru to Latin America and farther on to the Caribbean, Xi said in the article.

Xi Jinping joins APEC gathering in Peru, virtual opening of the Chancay Port, located north of Lima, Peru's capital.

Woodrow Wilson: Foreign Affairs | Miller Center |

In a statement issued soon after taking office, Woodrow Wilson declared that the United States hoped "to cultivate the friendship and deserve the confidence" of the Latin American states, but he also emphasized that he believed "just government" must rest "upon the consent of the governed."

Latin American states were hopeful for the prospect of being free to conduct their own affairs without American interference, but Wilson's insistence that their governments be democratic undermined the promise of self-determination.

In 1915, Wilson responded to chronic revolution in Haiti by sending in American marines to restore order, and he did the same in the Dominican Republic in 1916. The military occupations that followed failed to create the democratic states that were their stated objective. In 1916, Wilson practiced an old-fashioned form of imperialism by buying the Virgin Islands from their colonial master, Denmark, for $25 million.

Aggressive Moral Diplomacy

Mexico posed a special problem for Wilsonian diplomacy.

Need a new definition for "exceptionalism" now ‼️

Why Protests Matter | catnip @BooMan - 28 Sept 2005 |

Markos of Daily Kos on the subject of antiwar protests:

"...my biggest problem with anti-war protests is that they're obsolete. What do they accomplish? Historians still argue about the role Vietnam-era protests had on ending the war (shortened it versus prolonged it). But today, they mean nothing." So, what do they accomplish?

The populist Geert Wilders falsely claimed not the EU but NATO's accomplishments deserved the Nobel Prize ... what a warped mind for the Trump look-alike.
