From The River to the Sea

Labour under Keir Starmer: don't criticize Jewish State ...

'From the river to the sea': where does the slogan come from and what does it mean? | The Guardian - 31 Oct.  2023 |

"We won't rest until we have justice, until all people, Israelis and Palestinians, between the river and the sea can live in peaceful liberty," said Andy McDonald, a Labour MP, at a protest in London organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Three days later, McDonald was suspended from the party pending an investigation, leaving the former shadow cabinet minister sitting as an independent for now.

Some feel the decision was heavy handed while others see it as a sign of strong leadership from Keir Starmer as the Labour leader tries to draw a clear line between himself and his predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn.

Criticism of Israel for genocidal acts against Palestinians is not anti-Semitic but required to protect human rights. Fear is a poor guidance in an era of disinformation and war propaganda. Labour under Keir Starmer flunked the test of human rights issues.

Israel working to shut Al Jazeera | MEMO - 17 Oct. 2023 |

An official Israeli channel said that the Israeli Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara is in the process of submitting emergency regulations allowing Israel to shut down the operations of Qatar's Al Jazeera news station in Israel and stop it from broadcasting from there.

The regulations were proposed by Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, and his version gives him the authority to "instruct the Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Council to revoke a foreign media's broadcast licence; shut down its offices; and seize its equipment, if he believed that the outlet's broadcasts were harming state security," according to the Times of Israel.

Karhi had earlier accused Al Jazeera of "endangering the security of Israeli forces" by filming their positions and disseminating statements from the Palestinian group Hamas.

However, Baharav-Miara objects to the proposal because according to the current version of the regulations, authority is given to the communications minister instead of the Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, and that the orders against a foreign media outlet would not need the approval of a district court.

The security cabinet is currently deliberating the regulations, and the communications minister is urging it to approve the regulations despite the attorney general's opposition.

Renowned scholar slams German academic censorship after being fired for criticizing Israel | Anadolu Agency - 9 Feb. 2024 |

Ghassan Hage rejects accusations of antisemitism, says managers of Max Planck Society failed to defend academic freedom

Ghassan Hage, an internationally renowned scholar, slammed German academic institutions for suppressing criticism of Israel, after he was suddenly fired over allegations of anti-Semitic social media posts, Anadolu Agency reports.

"What to me is a fair, intellectual critique of Israel, for them is anti-Semitism, according to the law in Germany," he said in a statement late Thursday.

"I find the German's pseudo philosemitism self-serving and, at times, racist, instrumentalised to racialise the Palestinian and, more generally, the Arab and Muslim community in Germany," he stressed.

The Lebanese-Australian scientist was fired by The Max Planck Society, a leading German research institution, after local media published various controversial reports accusing him of disseminating anti-Semitic propaganda.

Hage strongly rejected the accusation and said he has always defended the peaceful co-existence of Jews, Muslims and Christians, and criticised both Israelis and Palestinians who work against this goal.

Biden lifts Trump sanctions on international criminal court officials

President Joe Biden lifted sanctions that Donald Trump had imposed on two top officials of the International Criminal Court, undoing one of the past administration's more aggressive moves targeting international institutions and officials.

We continue to disagree strongly with the ICC's actions relating to the Afghanistan and Palestinian situations.  We maintain our longstanding objection to the Court's efforts to assert jurisdiction over personnel of non-States Parties such as the United States and Israel.  We believe, however, that our concerns about these cases would be better addressed through engagement with all stakeholders in the ICC process rather than through the imposition of sanctions.

Our support for the rule of law, access to justice, and accountability for mass atrocities are important U.S. national security interests that are protected and advanced by engaging with the rest of the world to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Since the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals after World War II, U.S. leadership meant that history permanently recorded fair judgments issued by international tribunals against justly convicted defendants from the Balkans to Cambodia, to Rwanda and elsewhere.

We have carried on that legacy by supporting a range of international, regional, and domestic tribunals, and international investigative mechanisms for Iraq, Syria, and Burma, to realize the promise of justice for victims of atrocities. We will continue to do so through cooperative relationships.

The removal of the sanctions was the latest signal that the Biden administration is intent on returning to the multilateral fold. The Trump administration had unapologetically removed the United States from numerous international institutions and agreements and harshly criticized others, including the ICC, deeming them flawed and working against American interests.

Protest action by family Israeli hostages in The Hague -- some report the ICJ, others say it is before the ICC -- calling for arrest Hamas leaders. The group arrived in three buses ... they can travel, not so for Palestinians in Gaza.

'I am going to The Hague to speak for those who no longer can' | Israel Today |

Families of captives in Gaza fly to The Hague to charge Hamas with kidnapping, sexual violence.

The charges were detailed in a statement by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum and include kidnapping, sexual violence and torture.

"We submitted this brief to support the investigation led by International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan, hoping that he will ask the pre-trial chamber to issue arrest warrants against Hamas perpetrators," attorney Yuval Sasson from the Meitar law firm representing the Hostage Families Forum, told JNS.

"It is historic for Israelis to seek justice through the ICC with such substantive magnitude," said Sasson, who filed the submission in conjunction with Dr. Shelly Aviv Yeini, head of the international law team at the Hostage Families Forum, and members of the Montreal-based Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights.

Shock effect

Chris den Hoedt admits a day later that the organization should have prepared those present better. "We went for the shock effect. Many people have forgotten what happened on October 7, even though the attack is the reason for the current war. It now sometimes seems that only Israel is the aggressor. That is why we continue to draw attention to the atrocities.

In retrospect, we should have prepared the people better. So that everyone knew that the images based on security cameras, mobile phones, dashcams and seized bodycams from Hamas terrorists could cause emotions. We have not given enough thought to this and we will approach it differently from now on," says Den Hoedt.

The Israeli government has also previously shown the film with uncensored images to the media through various embassies, among others. In these cases, everyone was extensively warned in advance.

Israel's Decision on Ramadan Prayers Is a Farce. It Could End in Tragedy | Haaretz Op-ed - Amos Harel |

Ben-Gvir wasn't entirely successful in his attempt to impose sweeping limits on Arab-Israeli worshippers at Al-Aqsa. That didn't stop him from gloating - and risking the start of a religious conflict

Although Ben-Gvir made sure to warn of Arab-Jewish violence breaking out like it did in May 2021, his prediction was wrong. The Arab public in Israel showed restraint and patience, and many forcefully condemned Hamas' actions. The West Bank has seen some considerable escalation, but not enough to view it as joining the war started by Hamas.

War-battered economy plunged almost 20%, marking sharpest contraction since pandemic | TOI |

Israel's economy shrank by nearly one-fifth in the last three months of 2023, as war with the Hamas terror group in Gaza took a heavy toll on consumer spending, trade and investment, data released Monday showed.

Israel called up hundreds of thousands of reservists to join the fighting and evacuated large swaths of the Gaza and Lebanon border, with businesses shutting and people staying home under a rain of rockets as the country shifted to a war footing. Sectors that rely on foreign labor forces, such as construction and agriculture, were especially hard hit.

Though the war is ongoing, many reservists have returned home and economic activity has begun to recover as rocket fire from Gaza on Israeli cities has trailed off, though only some of that gradual recovery is reflected in the new numbers.

The double-digit contraction came after the economy grew by 2.7% in the third quarter of 2023. Much of the slide in gross domestic product stemmed from a 26.9% drop in private consumption in the October to December period, a sharp decline of 42.4% in the import of goods and services, an 18.3% dive in exports, and an 67.8% decline in investment in fixed assets, especially in residential building. Meanwhile, government spending surged 88.1% due to the war costs.

Earlier this month, US ratings agency Moody's cut Israel's credit rating by one notch from A1 to A2, and changed its outlook to "negative," citing the impact of the ongoing war with the Hamas terror group in Gaza on the government's debt burden, as well as fiscal and political risks.

Social media users say their Palestine content is being shadow banned - here's how to know if it's happening to you | The Conversation |

Imagine you share an Instagram post about an upcoming protest, but none of your hundreds of followers like it. Are none of your friends interested in it? Or have you been shadow banned?

Social media can be useful for political activists hoping to share information, calls to action and messages of solidarity. But throughout Israel's war on Gaza, social media users have suspected they are being censored through "shadow banning" for sharing content about Palestine.

Shadow banning describes loss of visibility, low engagement and poor account growth on platforms like Instagram, TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). Users who believe they are shadow banned suspect platforms may be demoting or not recommending their content and profiles to the main discovery feeds. People are not notified of shadow banning: all they see is the poor engagement they are getting.

Human Rights Watch, an international human rights advocacy non-governmental organisation, has recently documented what it calls "systemic censorship" of Palestine content on Facebook and Instagram. After several accusations of shadow banning, Meta (Facebook and Instagram's parent company) argued the issue was due to a "bug" and "had nothing to do with the subject matter of the content".

Most platforms are based in the US and govern even global content according to US law and values.

Social media users reported conversations and information about Black Lives Matter protests were shadowbanned in 2020. Now journalistic, activist and fact-checking content about Palestine also appears to be affected by this censorship technique.

Platforms are unlikely to admit to a shadow ban or bias in their content moderation.

But their stringent moderation of terrorism and violent content may be leading to posts about Palestine that is neither incitement to violence nor terror-related getting caught in censorship's net.

The real reason `from the river to the sea' has garnered so much condemnation | Mondoweiss |

The false labeling of Palestinian liberation slogans like "from the river to the sea" as calls for the elimination of Jews reveals an Israeli anxiety over its dispossession of the Palestinians from their land.

Ironically, Benjamin Netanyahu's son's proclamation on his social media pages, "Israel from the River to the Sea," has barely registered an objection, nor has Netanyahu's own proclamations that Israel will remain in control of the West Bank and Gaza been denounced as a signal presaging the Palestinian people's perpetual subjugation by Israel. In fact, both proclamations are perfectly in line with the 1977 Charter of Netanyahu's own Likud Party, which declared that "between the Sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty."
