EU Opens Another War Memorial

by Oui Sun Feb 25th, 2024 at 10:44:54 PM EST

Damn you CM-VDL-JB ... you let the United States and NATO destroy you ... no valiant warriors, just dead bodies as a result to show for your decisions along the way. Russia is no more than a regional power - words by our former President Barack Obama. The Russian Federation will now build their military forces against an ever expanding and aggressive NATO. Brussels and Washington will not stop at the present frontier of Baltic states, Finland and western Ukraine.

Like A Glove: Nord Stream Pipeline Sabotage and American Foreign Policy

Pure speculation tying two events together with no proof whatsoever ...

Headline Seymour Hersh:

Has Biden's pipeline sabotage led to the rise of the German right?

The German economy has been deprived for more than a year of cheap Russian gas, thanks in part to Joe Biden and his decision early last year to destroy the Nord Stream pipelines. Meanwhile, German politics is continuing its tumble to the right. It may bring much of Western Europe with it.

Analysis: Who blew up the Nord Stream pipelines?

US gains

The Nord Stream pipelines had been controversial from the outset insofar as the US was dead-set against them. Donald Trump, in 2019, claimed their construction and use would hold Europe hostage to Russia. Joe Biden then confirmed this idea saying the US were "unwavering" in opposition to Nord Stream 2, but that it was "in the national interest of the United States" to waive the sanctions.

When the Biden administration waived sanctions on the pipeline, allowing it to be completed (to appease German allies), Republican Ted Cruz tweeted that Biden's decision was "Stunning. In defiance of U.S. law, Biden is actively helping Putin build his pipeline." (Poland, too had also been opponents of the pipeline, previously diversifying their own supplies.)

Russia immediately claimed that the US had a lot to gain from the explosions.

Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia to the UN, when asked if the US would gain from the incident, declared, "The answer is undoubtedly. American liquefied natural gas suppliers should be celebrating the manifold increase in LNG supplies to Europe."

The US had been consistently increasing exports of LNG (liquified natural gas) by boat to Europe over the preceding years in light of the claims of a lack of reliability with Russian supply. Exploded pipes would surely see demand for US LNG itself explode, so to speak. Germany has gone from importing two-thirds of its natural gas from Russia to 0% of its natural gas from there. LNG is now the largest source of European gas. Between 1 March and 31 October last year, EU imports of US LNG rose by 148% compared to the same period the previous year in what is a US LNG export explosion.

The Intense Subsidy Race Unfolding in 2024 | China - U.S. Focus - 5 Jan. 2024 |

In 2024, we're globally witnessing an intense subsidy race driven by economic strategies, technological advancements, and national security imperatives. The convergence of these factors has reshaped subsidies into dynamic instruments, serving as both catalysts for self-reliance and geopolitical weapons. A unified overall strategy for economic stimulus and cooperation in new areas to navigate that complex interplay seems necessary.

In 2023, we observed the ominous consolidation of `economic security.' China's Foreign Relations Law was followed by the EU's Economic Security Strategy and Foreign Subsidies Regulation. Simultaneously, the U.S. issued an Executive Order on "Investments in Certain National Security Technologies" targeting "Countries of Concern."

As we move into the new year, the confluence of economic strategies, national security imperatives, and technological advancements continues to gather momentum, propelling global powers beyond mere economic dominance. This transition blurs the lines between economic prosperity and national security, prompting a recalibration for economic security. The focus shifts to enhancing resilience and autonomy across critical areas to minimize global dependencies.

In this evolving setting, protectionism takes root through various security measures, often disguised as government incentives. Subsidies, traditionally seen as a tool for developing public policies, also emerge as a less confrontational coercive measure. This shift is driven by the pursuit of self-sufficiency amid diplomatic efforts, exemplified by recent China summits with the U.S. (San Francisco) and the EU (Beijing).

dw | The EU recovery fund unmasked, 21 July 2020
EU leaders went the distance to agree a historic coronavirus recovery fund for the bloc. But doling out €750 billion in grants and loans will be a tricky task. Paying it back will be even harder.
A pot of grant gold

The €390 billion pot of grant aid is an important element of the agreement. That money will come from the €750 billion fund, known officially as "Next Generation EU." The European Commission will borrow all that money, issuing bonds with maturities of three to 30 years. The plan is to start repaying the money from 2027 on, with the tab to be settled by 2058....

Register now: Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and European Strategic Investments-9 April 2024
...The event will be an opportunity to reflect on the results of the RRF so far, including concrete investments and reforms. It will also look ahead at the remaining challenges and at how to ensure the RRF achieves its objectives over the remaining three years.

Finally, it will be an opportunity to discuss how the RRF, as an innovative funding instrument, could serve as an inspiration for further EU support to reforms and investments, as the need for strategic reforms and investments will remain high in the future....

commission.europa.eu | The Recovery and Resilience Facility
The Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) is a temporary instrument  that is the centrepiece of  NextGenerationEU - the EU's plan to emerge stronger and more resilient from the current crisis [FKA COVID-19 pandemic].

Through the Facility, the Commission raises funds by borrowing on the capital markets (issuing bonds on behalf of the EU). These are then available to its Member States, to implement ambitious reforms and investments that:

• make their economies and societies more sustainable, resilient and prepared for the green and digital transitions, in line with the EU's priorities;
• address the challenges identified in country-specific recommendations under the European Semester framework of economic and social policy coordination....
