A far-right extremist, Itamar Ben Gvir became the Minister for National Security  through Israel's last election in 2022. He is a long-time extremist activist, head of the Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party, who was convicted  in 2007 on charges of incitement to racism. His extremism is so virulent that he was exempted from serving in the Israel Defense Forces because of it.

Soon after assuming office, Ben Gvir vowed to increase the gun permits issued by his ministry from around 2,000 to 10,000 a month, and to reduce the waiting period from six to eight months to two to three.

Long before the brutal Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, Israeli society was already witnessing a rise in gun ownership. From 2021 to 2022, applications for gun ownership more than doubled, according to a March 2023 report by the BBC. But Ben Gvir wanted more. He wanted a large vigilante force among the citizenry -- especially those Israelis who live in West Bank settlements and in mixed Arab-Jewish towns in Israel. It's not hard to read that as an intent to promote Jewish Israelis shooting Palestinians, both citizens of Israel and those residing in the West Bank.

In April, Ben Gvir got the government to concede to his plan for a "national guard" that was essentially a private militia under his authority. He demonstrated what that authority would look like over the summer when he announced that settlers who shoot at Palestinians in the West Bank would no longer have their weapons confiscated. Until then, police would confiscate the weapon, usually temporarily, as they investigated the incident. Although the settlers would routinely get the weapons back, the change in policy sent a very clear message that it was open season on Palestinians.

Since October 7, Ben Gvir has moved even faster. "The minister's policy to distribute weapons to eligible Israeli citizens is clear and ongoing," read a statement in early December from Ben Gvir's office.

In the Netherlands extreme rightwing Islamophobes spreading hate get police protection to fulfill their provocation to set a Koran on fire ... the local Muslim community prevented the hate crime and attacked a few a$$holes of Pegida ... mayor Marcouch of Arnhem in shock.

Mayor Ahmed Marcouch of Arnhem says that he had no choice on Saturday but to allow the planned burning of a Koran in his city to go ahead. He does say, however, that the authorities did not anticipate that the counter-demonstration by the Muslim community would be so fierce. He strongly disapproves of the way in which the Muslim community asserted itself on Jansplein.

VVD leader and Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yesilgöz against ban Quran burning, expressing hatred against the Islam and its faithful

Strong discussion between ministers Bruins Slot (CDA) and Yesilgöz | De Telegraaf |

According to sources from The Hague, the cabinet has recently considered it. This led to a heated discussion between CDA minister Hanke Bruins Slot and VVD politician Dilan Yesilgöz.

Bruins Slot, who was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs after the departure of Wopke Hoekstra, is in favor of making Quran burnings more difficult by citing 'international security' as a reason to ban such demonstrations. Last year, the Swedish embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad was stormed and set on fire in protest against an announced Quran burning in Sweden. Bruins Slot fears that this could also happen to Dutch embassies if we do not take stronger action against Quran burnings in our own country.

She wants to investigate what the possibilities are for this. This should offer perspectives for action to mayors who are confronted with Koran actions.

'Do not change politics for fear of terror'

[Could have been a quote by Israeli fascist PM Netanyahu, equating a Free Palestine with terror post 9/11]

But according to insiders, Minister Yesilgöz (Security and Justice) is certainly not in favor of it. She calls the burning of Qurans 'primitive', 'tasteless' and 'shameful'. But according to her, it is simply allowed in a free democracy and should remain that way: "You must protect freedoms, even if they are freedoms that are interpreted in a way that you do not like."

UNSC emergency meeting: Iran urges UN condemnation of consulate building attack in Syria

Members of the United Nations Security Council are calling for de-escalation and accountability, following an Israeli air strike on the Iranian consulate building in Syria, which killed 14 people.

Iran's UN ambassador condemns Israel's attacks in Syria, calling them `terrorist' acts violating international law.

Iran told the council it reserves the right to take a decisive response. Something many on the council were warning against - but know could very well be likely.

Russia's UN envoy criticizes Israel's attacks in Syria amid Gaza war, cites violations of ceasefire resolution. Condemns assault on aid workers and Iranian consulate.

Iran has traditionally been hesitant to transfer ballistic missiles to Russia fearing blowback not only from the U.S. but also European countries. Until October 2023, when a U.N. arms embargo on missile transfers to Iran ended, Iran worried that the European members of the U.N. Security Council would instigate the snapback mechanism in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Now, however, Iran is legally able to supply the missiles and sanctioning such arms transfers is voluntary. European countries decided to retain sanctions on missile exports but could not re-invoke universal U.N. penalties.

thecradle | US threatens to veto Palestine UN membership vote, 17 Apr photo op
The US is actively working to prevent a draft resolution supporting the granting of full membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC) for Palestine, Sky News Arabia reports on 17 April. The source also added that the US threatened to veto the draft resolution if it was put to a vote. However, the source told the news channel that "the Palestinian decision and the Arab group is not to withdraw the decision and put it to a vote on it despite the threat of the American veto."

This comes after the US ambassador to the UN, Linda "Eat muh Gumbo" Thomas-Greenfield, said that Palestine becoming a full UN member would not lead to a "two-state" solution. Thomas-Greenfield made her comments during a news conference in Seoul, South Korea, when she was asked whether the US was willing to recognize the Palestinian Authority's request for full UN membership.

reuters | Full UN membership won't help Palestinians on statehood: US envoy, 17 Apr
"Thomas-Greenfield made the comments at a news conference in Seoul, after being asked whether the United States was open to recognise the request by the Palestinian Authority to have full U.N. membership. "We do not see that doing a resolution in the Security Council will necessarily get us to a place where we can find... a two-state solution moving forward," said Auntie Linda."
