Explosion heard in Beirut

At least one explosion has hit the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, which is a base for the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah.

This comes amid the expectation of an Israeli reaction following a deadly attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israel has blamed Hezbollah for strike, which has denied involvement.

Israel confirms it has carried out a 'targeted' strike

Israel's army says it has carried out a strike in Beirut, targeting the Hezbollah commander it says was responsible for the attack on the Golan Heights.

Some 12 children and young adults were killed in a rocket strike while playing football in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday.

The country's air force has blamed the Iran-backed militant group for Saturday's strike on the Druze town of Majdal Shams, but Hezbollah has strongly denied any involvement.

Israeli lawmaker defends alleged rape of Hamas prisoner as far-right protesters rage over IDF troops' detention | CBS News |

Ultra-right-wing Israeli nationalists stormed two military facilities late Monday, protesting the detention and questioning of nine Israel Defense Forces reservists suspected of raping and abusing a Palestinian prisoner whose injuries were so bad he had to be hospitalized. Social media videos show guards at the Sde Teiman military base and prison, near Beersheba in southern Israel, shouting at and pushing military police who'd arrived to question the reservists, seemingly in defense of the suspects.

The Sde Teiman facility is known to hold Palestinians arrested in Gaza since Israel launched its war on the territory's Hamas rulers, in response to the group's gruesome Oct. 7 terrorist attack.

United States Air Force participated in the covert act to strike inside Iran and murder Ismail Haniyeh. The Iraqi air space is controlled by the U.S. and at the same time the USAF bombed a target South of Baghdad. Early accounts say an IAF F-35 aircraft fired a missile from Iraq sovereign territory.

Malaysia slams Meta over removal of post of premier's meeting with Hamas chief

Instagram post was related to Anwar Ibrahim's meeting with Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar

Malaysia on Wednesday slammed Meta, the parent company of Instagram, over the recent removal of a post of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's meeting with Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh from the social media platform.

"This action clearly shows discrimination against the situation in Palestine and the country's leaders," a statement by the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office said on X.

It demanded "an explanation" and called on Meta to "apologize."

According to the statement, the post was related to Anwar's meeting with Haniyeh in May when the former was on a trip to Qatar.

Hamas said earlier on Wednesday that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Iranian capital. He was in Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new president on Tuesday.

Israel assassinates head of Hamas political bureau amid regional escalation | 31 July 2024 |

Israel assassinated Hamas politburo head Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran after a series of mounting regional tensions that included unprecedented Israeli attacks on the "Axis of Resistance," including airstrikes on Beirut and Yemen.

Resilience and broader strength of resistance movement against occupation, and for a free Palestine.

The real reason Israel is assassinating Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, and why it won't stop the resistance | Mondoweiss |

On the night of July 30, Israel escalated its military operations, targeting its adversaries across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, Iran, and Palestine. The Israeli government claimed a significant success with the assassination of a Hezbollah commander in the densely populated neighborhood of southern Beirut. Simultaneously, Israel launched a bold strike in the heart of Tehran, killing Ismail Haniyeh, the current politburo chief of Hamas.

After ten months of slowly but steadily losing the escalation dominance it had maintained for decades, Israel is now attempting to reclaim the initiative and reestablish the upper hand by targeting both Beirut and Tehran in under 24 hours.

Israel's actions are not merely about projecting strength; they are also designed to increase pressure on the axis of resistance. The strategic objective here is to fracture the unity of this coalition by leveraging its military capabilities to flirt with the prospect of an all-out war -- an outcome that neither Israel nor Hezbollah, and by extension Iran, truly desire. This calculated brinkmanship aims to unsettle the adversaries, forcing them to reconsider their unified stance and possibly leading to concessions in Israel's favor.

The declining efficacy of Israeli assassinations

Israel's fear of peace, coupled with its insistence on maintaining dominance through force and the ironic presence of figures like Mahmoud Abbas, who, by enabling Israel's colonization in the West Bank without resistance, have led Palestinians and Palestinian resistance groups to dismiss any serious approach towards negotiated solutions. These dynamics have deepened the conviction that meaningful change cannot be achieved through dialogue with a state that continues to prioritize force and hegemony over genuine peace efforts.

Moreover, Palestinians have both reframed their resistance and institutionalized its organizational structures. The character of these organizations has evolved, becoming less dependent on a cult of personality or deep emotional ties with individual leaders, and more focused on organizational roles and operational efficacy. Gone are the days when resistance groups would collapse into disarray following the loss of a key figure.

Today, Palestinian and Lebanese resistance movements have adapted to the reality that the assassination of a prominent leader may cause a tactical setback, but it does not lead to the disintegration of their operations. In fact, in many instances, these groups have demonstrated resilience, using such incidents as a catalyst for the further consolidation and strengthening of their organizational frameworks. This shift reflects a maturing of the resistance movements, where the focus is on sustainability and continuity rather than on the influence of individual leaders or specific clientelist networks bent on building influence within a specific political formation.

According to court records, the United States obtained court authorization to seize five domains registered to the Public Interest Registry (PIR) - moqawama.org, almanarnews.org, manarnews.org, almanar-tv.org, and alshahid.org - and eight domains registered to Verisign Inc. - manartv.net, manarnews.net, almanar-tv.com, almanar-tv.net, alidaamouch.com, Ibrahim-alsayed.net, alemdad.net, and naimkassem.net.

Islamic Resistance Movement - Hamas

HAMAS-the acronym for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya (Islamic Resistance Movement)--is the largest and most capable militant group in the Palestinian territories and one of the territories' two major political parties. HAMAS emerged in 1987 during the first Palestinian uprising, or intifada, as an outgrowth of the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestinian branch.

Resistance against military occupation and human suffering

The group is committed to armed resistance against Israel and the creation of an Islamic Palestinian state in Israel's place. HAMAS has been the de facto governing body in the Gaza Strip since 2007, when it ousted the Palestinian Authority from power.

Israel's team lineup is full of soldier-footballers. FIFA's failure to ban it makes it complicit in genocide | New Arab |

One Israeli football player, Shon Weissman asked: "Why haven't 200 tonnes of bombs already been dropped on Gaza?". He's in the Israeli air force.

His teammate Tomer Yosefi said on Instagram: "We'll erase Gaza permanently".

Even the Israeli women's team put together a montage where they switch back and forth between their Israeli army uniforms and football jerseys. The message is clear: we are not just football players, but soldiers, and proud of it.

FIFA claims that football should be impartial and apolitical. Yet many Israeli football clubs host receptions for Israeli soldiers, fundraise for them, promote recruitment, and post pro-war propaganda online and obituaries for dead Israelis.
