Insisting that "the defense of democracy is more important than any title," President Joe Biden on Wednesday will explain in an Oval Office address his decision to drop his bid for reelection and to throw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

The address offered the public their first chance to hear directly from Biden his rationale for dropping out of the 2024 after weeks of insisting he believed himself to be the best candidate to take on former President Donald Trump, whom he has called an existential threat to the nation's democracy. It also gave Biden a chance to try to shape how history views his one and only term in office.

The Biden Report: No Wars To Be Seen - OpEd | EurAsiaReview |

Before his surprising decision to withdraw from a campaign he promised to conduct to the bitter end, Joe Biden had achieved one uncontestable distinction. Even without a second term, he had become the oldest occupant of the White House in US history.

Although some, including Biden himself, deem him a "great president, a group of historians less impressed by his achievements ranked him as the 14th best president. The man who inherited a number of often contestable policies put into practice by his three predecessors -- George W Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump -- did very little to distinguish himself as the first to do much of anything really memorable.

Biden's three predecessors will be remembered for their distinctive roles in 21st century history. Bush was the first to invade multiple countries using the original concept of "preventive war." Obama was the first black person to be elected president. And Trump distinguished himself by being the first "stable genius" seeking to innovate in so many interesting ways. His most spectacular contribution to US political culture was to demonstrate that one could govern by tweeting.

In contrast, Biden, who had promised to become the new FDR, in the end simply prolonged existing policies, even the contestable ones, already in place.

It was therefore edifying to learn from Biden's own testimony that he believes he's first in one area that seems to have escaped most people's notice. "I'm the first president this century," Biden read from a teleprompter, "to report to the American people that the United States is not at war anywhere in the world."

General Michael Kurilla arrived in Israel on Saturday "as preparations continue for a possible attack against Israel from Iran [and Hezbollah] in retaliation for the assassinations of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders," two US officials told Axios on 4 August.

Kurilla had already been planning a trip to Israel prior to the serious escalation, which saw Tel Aviv attack Beirut and Tehran within hours of each other.

"He is expected to use the trip to try to mobilize the same international and regional coalition that defended Israel against an attack from Iran on Apr. 13," an official told Axios.

According to a U.S. official, Kurilla is expected to visit several Gulf countries, Jordan, and Israel.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the US will maintain the presence of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, and has ordered more ballistic missile and defense-capable cruisers and warships to the region. An additional squadron of fighter jets has also been deployed, in line with US President Joe Biden's vow to send new deployments in defense of Israel during his phone call with Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) issued a statement on August 3 claiming that Israel killed Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran using a short-range projectile equipped with an explosive warhead. The statement claimed that the projectile was fired from outside the guesthouse where Haniyeh was staying in northern Tehran. The IRGC also claimed that the projectile was equipped with a "seven-kilogram warhead." The IRGC vowed to retaliate severely against Israel at the "appropriate time and place" for the killing of Haniyeh.

The statement follows an August 1 New York Yella Cake report that stated, citing seven anonymous Middle Eastern officials, that Israel killed Haniyeh by remotely detonating an explosive device covertly smuggled into the Tehran guesthouse months in advance.
