A Turkish-American young woman, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, killed in the Occupied West Bank last week is being remembered in Seattle, where she'd been studying. It's led to more strident criticism of the Israeli military from US President Joe Biden.

END OF UPDATE

An autopsy of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American activist, has confirmed she was killed by an Israeli sniper's bullet to the head, Nablus governor Ghassan Daghlas said on Saturday.

In a statement to Anadolu, Daghlas said the autopsy results indicated Eygi's cause of death was a gunshot wound inflicted by a sniper, specifically targeting her head. Eygi had been rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead upon arrival.

He said the examination was conducted late Friday night at the Forensic Medicine Institute, An-Najah National University in Nablus.
Palestinian officials had earlier suggested Eygi's death was likely the result of deliberate targeting by an Israeli sniper.

According to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources, information about Eygi's death was shared with the Turkish consulate in Jerusalem on Friday.

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, 26, was "shot in the head" while participating in a demonstration in Beita in the occupied West Bank on Friday.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken deplored the "tragic loss", while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan branded the Israeli action "barbaric"

Turkey's foreign ministry said Ms Eygi was "killed by Israeli occupation soldiers in the city of Nablus".

The White House did not ascribe blame, but called on Israel to investigate. Earlier, US state department spokesman Matthew Miller said Washington was "urgently gathering more information about the circumstances of her death".

Ms Eygi was born in Antalya, as reported by Turkish media.

Following criticism for repeating Israeli claims, Biden now says he's `outraged' over killing of U.S. citizen | Mondoweiss |

Joe Biden released a new statement condemning the killing of Aysenur Eygi the day after repeating an Israeli claim that she was killed accidentally by a bullet that had "ricocheted off the ground."

On Wednesday President Joe Biden released a new statement on the killing of Aysenur Eygi, the American activist who was shot by an Israeli sniper during a protest in the occupied West Bank last week.

"I am outraged and deeply saddened by the death of Aysenur Eygi. Aysenur was a recent U.S. college graduate," said Biden. "She was also an activist whose idealism led her to travel to the West Bank to peacefully protest the expansion of settlements. The shooting that led to her death is totally unacceptable."

The statements come just a day after Biden was criticized for telling reporters that Eygi's death was "apparently was an accident," as an Israeli bullet had "ricocheted off the ground" before hitting her. Eyewitness accounts from both activists with Eygi and doctors who treated her reported that she had been directly shot in the head.

At a White House briefing press secretary Karine Jean Pierre told reporters that Biden was referring to information from an Israeli military investigation into the incident that the Israeli government had shared with him.

Seattle's Friend, Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi

The Activist, Baklava Enthusiast, and Friend that Israel "Stole" from Seattle

Over their years of friendship, Nabass said they learned how to pull the perfect espresso shot from Eygi's fully manual espresso machine, enjoyed sunsets at the waterfront, and watched horror movies on Netflix together.

On Friday, Nabass received a text "that completely shattered" her reality. Even standing at the vigil, Nabass said she still couldn't believe Israel had "martyred" her best friend. Nabass wondered how Eygi felt in her last moments, lying alone under the olive trees. She wondered if she knew how many people her memory would draw out to Alki Beach. She wondered how the Israeli army could be so cowardly as to see Eygi as a threat.

ISM Palestine is the same organization of peace activists which has been targeted before: the murder of Rachel Corrie. The U.S. refused to carry out an independent inquiry. Years of anguish for parents, family and friends.

"I Think the Word Is Dignity" -- Rachel Corrie's Letters from Gaza

Letters to her family from 23-year-old U.S. peace activist Rachel Corrie, who was killed in 2003 while trying to prevent the Israeli army from destroying homes in the Gaza Strip.

    February 7, 2003

Hi friends and family, and others,

I have been in Palestine for two weeks and one hour now, and I still have very few words to describe what I see. It is most difficult for me to think about what's going on here when I sit down to write back to the United States. Something about the virtual portal into luxury. I don't know if many of the children here have ever existed without tank-shell holes in their walls and the towers of an occupying army surveying them constantly from the near horizons. I think, although I'm not entirely sure, that even the smallest of these children understand that life is not like this everywhere. An 8-year-old was shot and killed by an Israeli tank two days before I got here, and many of the children murmur his name to me -- Ali -- or point at the posters of him on the walls. The children also love to get me to practice my limited Arabic by asking me, "Kaif Sharon?" "Kaif Bush?" and they laugh when I say, "Bush Majnoon," "Sharon Majnoon" back in my limited Arabic. (How is Sharon? How is Bush? Bush is crazy. Sharon is crazy.) Of course, this isn't quite what I believe, and some of the adults who have the English correct me: "Bush mish Majnoon" . . .  Bush is a businessman. Today I tried to learn to say, "Bush is a tool," but I don't think it translated quite right. But anyway, there are 8-year-olds here much more aware of the workings of the global power structure than I was just a few years ago.

Death of an Idealist - Rachel Corrie

American girl killed by Israeli bulldozer whilst trying to stop demolition of Palestinian homes.

Rachel Corrie was aged 23 when she was killed by an Israeli Army bulldozer.
She had gone to Gaza as part of her senior-year college assignment to connect her home-town with Rafah in a sister cities project.

While there, she had engaged with other International Solidarity Movement (ISM) activists in efforts to prevent the Israeli army's demolition of Palestinian houses.

According to the Israeli authorities the demolitions were carried out to eliminate weapons-smuggling tunnels.According to human rights groups the demolitions were collective punishment.

In 2005 PM Ariel Sharon took bold action to pull the illegal settlements out of Gaza as other Zionists promised these will be rebuild in Judea and Samaria, the Palestinian West Bank territory.

One extremist settler provocation after another ... Ben Gvir and Smotrich leading the pack of Kahane terrorists.

Kuwait's foreign ministry has said the move is a "serious escalation derived from the provocative approach aimed at expanding the scope of illegal settlement operations" in the occupied West Bank.

The statement comes after Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, accompanied by military commanders, visited the valley, which is located near the border with Jordan.

Netanyahu said there are attempts to smuggle "terrorists and weapons" from Jordan into the West Bank and announced a plan to build a stronger border barrier.

"We warn of the consequences of continuing these violations and undermining the international efforts aimed at stopping the ongoing aggression on the Gaza Strip."

West Bank: Israeli settlement discharge wastewater destroys Palestinian lands and livelihoods

A new report from the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has laid bare the devastating environmental and economic consequences of the unlawful discharge of untreated wastewater from Israeli settlements into Palestinian lands in the occupied West Bank.

In both sites researched for the report, wastewater, including human sewage and animal waste, flowing from illegal Israeli settlements for long distances has damaged crops and knocked agricultural Palestinian lands out of use.

"Once more, Palestinians in the occupied West Bank pay a heavy price for Israel's unrelenting settlement expansion policies," said Samah Hadid, NRC's Middle East and North Africa Head of Advocacy. "This time, their land, livelihoods, and well-being are threatened by the harmful dumping of hazardous wastewater.

"We urge the international community, particularly Israel's staunchest allies, to exert pressure on Israel, the occupying power, to safeguard Palestinian communities, lands, and resources from the detrimental effects of disposed waste," said Hadid. "It is imperative that affected farmers and communities not only receive reparations but also receive the support to recover and improve their conditions."

Laboratory analysis commissioned by NRC at two sites, Wadi Shakhit in Hebron and around the Immanuel industrial zone in Qalqilya, supports the long-standing complaints of Palestinian farmers and landowners that untreated wastewater was released from Israeli settlements into Palestinian lands. The samples from Wadi Shakhit and Immanuel industrial zone vicinity showed the presence of faecal-associated E. coli bacteria in high quantities, which provides an indication of recent sewage or animal waste contamination.

"Israel's settlements routinely contaminate critical water systems and agricultural lands with wastewater, exacerbating environmental risks, further destabilising the already fragile Palestinian economy, and heightening the likelihood of various diseases like diarrhoea and kidney failure," added Hadid.

Woman, Life, Freedom: Rachel, Shireen, Mahsa and Ayşenur | Informed Comment |

Rachel Corrie had gone to Rafah in March 2003 ... in Gaza to help Palestinians halt the demolition of homes died under the bulldozer of the Israeli army.

Her parents fought the judiciary system in Israel for two decades to no avail.  The court rejected their appeals, and no one was prosecuted.  It is the usual case in Israel, the only "democracy" in the Middle East.

[...]

On September 7, 2024, a young woman also from Seattle, this time a Turkish American aged 26 had gone to the West Bank for the very same reasons.  She was shot in the head by the Israeli Army.

Her name was Ayşenur Eygi.

She, like Rachel, had a full life ahead of her.

Not only did these women want a better world but they also put their aspirations into action. They could have had a career like so many others but instead they took a different route: To be instrumental in making a change in this very unjust world of ours.

Rachel had been born into a middle class, peace-loving family.

Ayşenur was born into a Turkish American family. She resisted and struggled for the right of a people whose livelihood and land were being stolen by settlers, guarded by the most immoral army in the world.

She was shot to death like countless others before and since 10/7.

The Americans and the Israelis did nothing to secure justice for any of these women.
