Trump and the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and Turkey -- guarantors to the Israel-Hamas deal -- signed a document on Monday that one diplomat called "more of a vision statement than anything".

In devastated Gaza, the ceasefire is mostly holding, but most of the details of Trump's 20-point peace plan have yet to be thrashed out.

These include significant possible stumbling blocks, like Hamas's disarmament, the Palestinian territory's future governance and the role of a supervisory so-called "Board of Peace".

While Trump held what amounted to a victory rally in the Israeli Knesset on Monday, more than two dozen world leaders -- including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and UN chief Antonio Guterres -- were kept waiting all day in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Red carpet shuffle

In a meeting held ahead of his arrival, they intended to press him on aid and governance, according to a participant.

But when he arrived, four hours behind schedule, they lined up in a queue that snaked all the way around the room to greet the man who claims he can "bring peace to the Middle East".

One after the other, they stepped onto a red carpet to shake hands with a beaming Trump, over a giant sign that read "PEACE 2025".

"It was a very bizarre day... Just the show, the speech with all these leaders lined up, it was crazy," one diplomat told AFP, requesting anonymity in order to speak freely about diplomatic events.

"I've never seen anything like it, and I don't think many people have."
As Trump and Sisi delivered addresses, most of the leaders stood dutifully behind them in an unorthodox configuration that even Trump questioned.

Some refused to take part, with France's Macron, Jordan's King Abdullah II and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas remaining seated.

"He's not going to stand behind a leader as he speaks," said a French diplomat travelling with Macron, who also accompanied Abbas on stage for a reportedly unplanned handshake, which ended up being one of Trump's longest.

The chosen one

Egypt -- whose leaders have taken every opportunity to praise Trump as the "only one in the world capable of achieving peace" -- pulled out all the stops.

Sharm el-Sheikh was covered in billboards featuring Trump and Sisi's smiling faces alongside slogans of peace.

Trump & Macron's Aggressive Handshake At Gaza Peace Summit Goes Viral | News9 |

A video from the Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt showing U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in a long, aggressive handshake has taken social media by storm. The viral clip captures both leaders trying to outgrip each other during the exchange -- a mix of diplomacy and dominance at play in Sharm El Sheikh.

On Monday, in Sharm El Sheikh, Trump and Macron held hands tightly for nearly half a minute, appearing to vie for physical dominance during a photo op. A professional lip reader who observed the interaction suggested that the two might have exchanged subtle threats and accusations before agreeing to continue their discussion privately.

"Nice to see you, so you agreed?" Trump asked Macron as he joined him on the summit stage, according to lip reader Nicola Hickling. Macron responded while facing away from the camera.

"Is it genuine?" Trump seemed to ask. "Of course," Macron replied.

"Okay, so now I want to know why. You hurt me. I already know," Trump appeared to say. "I am making peace."

Macron tapped Trump's hand and looked down at it, saying, "Excuse me," according to Hickling.

Trump seemed to disregard his request and tightened his grip on Macron's hand.

"Let's handle this behind closed doors," Macron seemed to suggest. "I only hurt the other," Trump shot back.

"I see. We will have to see about that -- you will see what is about to happen," Macron cautioned.

The assassination of Saleh Aljafarawi is meant to send a dark message

Gaza journalists have been warned that they still are not safe, that they still face death for reporting.

When I heard of the murder of Saleh Aljafarawi, I was in shock. The war had finally ended. We all should have been safe. How could this happen? His assassination not only broke hearts; it also brought back the feeling of insecurity and fear.

Saleh and I lived in the same neighbourhood of Gaza City. We all knew him as a cheerful young man who loved singing. I remember seeing him during Eid prayers in front of the mosque, distributing sweets to children. He would sit and sing for them; my little sister loved to ask him to sing for her and her friends.

[...]

Because of his popularity, he became a target. Israel started issuing threats against him, just like it did against Anas al-Sharif, Ismail al-Ghoul and Hassan Eslaih before assassinating them.

The night the ceasefire was confirmed, Saleh released a cheerful video announcing it, which went viral. His family felt safe for the first time. They thought the danger Saleh was facing was finally over, and they were hoping for Naji's release so they could all be reunited.

But Saleh did not stop covering events. Although the occupation claimed to have withdrawn from Gaza, they left behind armed militias to spread chaos in the Strip. When the resistance clashed with these militias in the Sabra neighbourhood, Saleh was there covering it.

According to reports, he was kidnapped, beaten and shot seven times.

Palestinians released after months of detention without trial: 'Tortured and humiliated' | NOS - National Broadcaster |

Most of the detainees were in so-called administrative detention, where they are held indefinitely without charge. Among them is photographer Shadi Abu Sido, who was arrested during a raid on Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City in March 2024.

"They abused us, they insulted us. They said they had killed our children and that Gaza was destroyed," he told a local journalist upon his release. "Now I'm back in Gaza after twenty months, and everything is gone. This isn't Gaza. Where is the world?"

Tortured and Humiliated

Twenty-one-year-old Ibrahim Abd Albani was also released today. He had been held since February of last year, first in a detention center for two months, then in Ofer Prison.

"Things were a little better in prison than before, but I was still tortured and humiliated," Ibrahim told a local journalist working for the NOS. Ibrahim became malnourished and developed skin diseases due to the poor hygiene in prison. He was held without charge.

"We are so happy he's back," says Ibrahim's mother. Her father was also arrested and died in custody. "Despite all the devastation and all our loss, I am incredibly happy to see my son again."

Reunion Captured

An Al Jazeera video captures the moment Ibrahim reunites with his parents. The young man is giving an interview to the TV station. In the middle of a response, his mother runs up and hugs him. Shortly after, his father joins them.

Palestinians are posting more videos of returned family members on social media. Yousef Salem shared a video of his nephew Haitham in a wheelchair in the hospital in Khan Younis. Haitham is crying. He had just learned that his wife and children were killed a few weeks ago during his captivity.

Gaza ceasefire outlook darkens as Israel delays aid | RTE News |

In Gaza, Hamas fighters are reasserting control over areas that Israeli forces have vacated, raising concerns that the group may refuse to step aside in line with the peace plan.

The durability of the ceasefire is also being tested by Israel, which delayed the reopening of the Rafah border crossing into Gaza. Officials cited Hamas's failure to return the bodies of all 28 deceased hostages as agreed.

And a warning that this report contains images that some viewers may find disturbing.

Gaza's Rafah border crossing will remain closed through Wednesday, Israel says

Expansion Ottoman Rule?

Israel may not appreciate Turkey's participation in the Arabian peacekeeping role with boots on the ground in the Gaza Strip.

Trump coziness with the authoritarian ruler of the AKP party of Turkey may play a key role in the Ukraine war .. getting Crimea back for a NATO naval base in the Black Sea. Likely easier than conquering Bagram AFB in a hostile Taliban country.
