Trump calls on Israel to stop bombing Gaza, Hamas says willing to free hostages

My comments as it happened in the evening of October 3rd.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was surprised by US President Donald Trump's statement saying he believes Hamas is "ready for a lasting peace" and calling on Israel to immediately halt strikes in Gaza, an Israeli official tells Channel 12 news.

Hamas responded to a 20-point peace plan outlined by President Trump, and agreed to release all Israeli prisoners, alive and dead. Hamas expressed willingness to negotiate through mediators on Trump's plan for peace in the Middle East.

JERUSALEM: Gaza's civil defense agency said Saturday that Israel carried out dozens of air strikes and artillery shelling on Gaza City despite Trump's appeal to end bombardments after Hamas accepted a ceasefire deal.

"It was a very violent night, during which the (Israeli army) carried out dozens of air strikes and artillery shelling on Gaza City and other areas in the Strip, despite President Trump's call to halt the bombing," civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP.

Bassal, whose agency is a rescue force which operates under Hamas authority, added that 20 homes were destroyed in the overnight bombardments.

 Israel's military said Saturday it was continuing its offensive in Gaza City and warned residents not to return to the area which it described as a "dangerous combat zone".

Hundreds of thousands turn out at pro-Palestinian marches in Europe

Huge numbers turned out at pro-Palestinian rallies in Europe on Saturday, calling for an immediate end to the war in Gaza and the release of activists on board a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the territory.

Organisers of the protest in Rome said hundreds of thousands of people had turned out for a fourth day running, after Israel intercepted the 45-strong flotilla seeking to reach Gaza earlier this week.

Some 70,000 people, according to police, took to the streets in Barcelona, in one of several pro-Palestinian protests to take place across Spain.
Elsewhere, several thousand people marched through the centre of the Irish capital, Dublin, to mark what organisers said was "two years of genocide" in Gaza.

With Ireland, Spain is one of the fiercest European critics of Israel's military offensive in Gaza, which was sparked by Hamas militants' October 7, 2023, attack on Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip.

But in Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's hard-right government has been criticised for its inaction on the siege of the Palestinian territory.
