US drops ’Hamas disarmament' demands in Gaza truce talks | The Cradle |

The US government has dropped its demand for Hamas to disarm as a precondition for a ceasefire in Gaza, Egyptian sources revealed to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

“US negotiators conveyed to Egyptian intermediaries that the issue of Hamas's disarmament could be addressed at a later stage, rather than being an immediate requirement for a ceasefire agreement,” the Qatari-owned news outlet reports.

The unnamed source added that US President Donald Trump's “inner circle” is convinced of the “futility” of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's strategy to free the captives via military pressure, believing that no military option will help save the Israeli captives in Gaza.

Furthermore, US planners are reportedly aware of the “impracticality of forcibly exiling leaders and fighters from the armed wings of Hamas” and other Palestinian resistance factions due to “concerns from potential host countries and the large number of individuals Israel seeks to remove," which number in the thousands.

The Egyptian source reported a “sense of optimism” among negotiators regarding the possibility of reaching a comprehensive solution in the near future, especially given Hamas's readiness to release all Israeli detainees in Gaza simultaneously and the potential for an acceptable framework controlling the resistance's weapons and the movement post-agreement.

Washington's sudden shift follows reports in Hebrew media indicating that Trump has “lost patience” with Netanyahu and will not wait any longer for Israel before advancing US initiatives in West Asia.

Erdogan comes to leaders meeting with footage exposing `EU terrorism support' | EurActiv - 26 Mar. 2018 |

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrives in the Bulgarian port city of Varna today (26 March) equipped with video footage that allegedly illustrates Ankara's claim that EU countries host terrorists and do nothing to fight them.

Turkey and the EU differ on the definition on terrorism. Ankara calls terrorists all those perceived as enemies of Erdoğan's regime.

If indeed this would be Erdoğan's main message, it is unlikely that tomorrow's meeting will make any headway.

Turkey is conducting an "anti-terrorist" operation in Syria called "Olive branch". In a non-binding resolution, the European Parliament called on Turkey to remove its troops from Afrin, where Ankara is targeting the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia in an offensive launched nearly two months ago.

Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist organisation that is a Syrian extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade conflict against the Turkish state. The PKK is considered a terrorist organisation by the EU and the United States, as well as by Turkey.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has sharply criticised Turkey's military offensive in Afrin.

Speaking in the Bundestag on 21 March she said that Turkey's actions were unacceptable despite its security interests. "I'm also condemning this in the strongest terms", Merkel stated.

Ankara is also asking EU countries to extradite so-called 'Gülenists', as terrorists responsible for the failed July 2016 coup.
