What pushed the putsch against Erdogan and what next? | AFP / Gulf News |

He weathered anti-government protests that lasted for months in 2013. He escaped the flames that engulfed some of his ministers in a corruption investigation nearly three years ago.

And now Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has survived a military coup - a boast many of his predecessors ousted in previous army takeovers cannot share.

- What prompted the coup? -

In recent years, critics, foreign governments and Turkish citizens have expressed concerns about a steady decline into authoritarianism under Erdogan.

Syrian rebels 'used sarin gas', says UN's del Ponte (May 2013)

Following information has been denied and censored as soon as it appeared in Turkish media ...

(Today's Zaman) - Seven members of Syria's militant al-Nusra group were detained after police found sarin gas, which was reportedly going to be used in a bomb attack, during a search of the suspects' homes, Turkish media have reported.

Newspapers claimed that two kilograms of sarin gas, which is usually used for making bombs and was banned by the UN in 1991, had been found in the homes of suspects detained in the southern provinces of Adana and Mersin.

Ukraine-Russia Negotiation Failure Plus Other Items | by b @MofA |

After some diplomatic gyrations, talks between the Russian Federation and Ukraine took place today in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Russian side had sent largely same delegation which had negotiated with Ukraine in March and April 2022. It sees the current negotiations as a continuation of the older ones, provided that new facts on the ground are taken into account.

The Ukrainian delegation was headed by its Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov. Its task was to demand an immediate ceasefire and to prepare a meeting between the presidents of the two countries.

The talks ended after just two hours.

The Russian side is said to have demanded a Ukrainian retreat from the four oblast the Russians have largely conquered and integrated into their country.

The Ukrainian side demanded an immediate ceasefire, the return of children the Russians had removed from the areas involved in military operations and the exchange of all prisoners (of which Russia has many more than Ukraine). It is obvious that Ukrainian side is not interested (yet) in making peace.

Both sides rejected the other side's demands and that was it. For now ...

The balance of power in the war is clearly on the Russian side. The Ukrainian army will thus continue to bleed and lose on the battlefield.

Russia is NOT interested in the NATO trap of a Minsk 3 agreement which continues strengthening military assets along the thousands of miles frontier Europe with the Russian Federation. Unacceptable and the root cause of the Ukraine proxy war 2014-2025.

The Latest Putin-Trump Chat & Other Issues

President Putin provided a synopsis [+video] for the Media after his chat with Trump:

Vladimir Putin: Good evening!

My colleagues asked me to say a few words about the results of our telephone conversation with the President of the United States.

Indeed, this conversation took place, lasted more than two hours. I would like to note that it was very informative and very frank. And in general, in my opinion, it is very useful in this regard.

First of all, I thanked the President of the United States for the support of the United States in resuming direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on the possible conclusion of a peace agreement, on the resumption of negotiations that were interrupted by the Ukrainian side, as you know, back in 2022.

The President of the United States expressed his position on the cessation of hostilities, the truce, and I, for my part, also noted that Russia also supports a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. We simply need to identify the most effective ways to move towards peace.

We have agreed with the President of the United States that Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum on a possible future peace treaty, defining a number of positions, such as, for example, the principles of settlement, the timing of a possible conclusion of a peace agreement, and so on, including a possible ceasefire for a certain period of time if the relevant agreements are reached.

By the way, contacts between the participants of the meeting and negotiations in Istanbul have resumed, and this gives reason to believe that we are on the right track in general.

Erdogan the Conqueror of Syria

Erdogan and Türkiye got its coveted prize: the State of Syria … the end and the means don’t quite match any human rights law.

Erdogan family’s jihadist foundation portrays him as ‘conqueror of Syria’ | 11 Dec. 2024 |

Another post from TÜGVA’s Istanbul branch included an image of a man stepping on a toppled statue of Hafez al-Assad, who was the ruler of Syria from 1971 until his death in 2000 and father of now-ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The caption read: “We will bring down the tyrants in Hama, Homs, Aleppo and Damascus — victory is near!” Among Turkish Islamists, images of destroyed statues are often interpreted as subliminal references to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the secular founder of the Republic of Turkey, reflecting their opposition to his legacy and a deeper ideological message in these celebrations.
