The UN has said the blockade has caused severe shortages of food, medicines and fuel, and an assessment on Monday warned that Gaza's population of around 2.1 million people was at "critical risk" of famine.

Amman, May 21 (Petra) - Several European countries have sharply escalated their criticism of Israel following an incident in which Israeli occupation forces fired warning shots at a visiting European diplomatic delegation in the city of Jenin, located in the occupied West Bank. The confrontation has led multiple European capitals to summon Israeli ambassadors to demand urgent explanations.

In Rome, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the summoning of the Israeli ambassador over what he described as "unacceptable threats," referring to the warning shots fired by Israeli soldiers toward Italian diplomats.

Spain's Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, stated that Madrid had summoned the Israeli envoy to protest the incident, which occurred during an official diplomatic mission to Jenin.

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib called on Israel via X to provide "convincing" explanations, affirming that the warning shots targeted about 20 diplomats including a Belgian national who were part of a clearly identifiable convoy that had been coordinated with the Israeli military.

France also announced it had summoned the Israeli ambassador, calling the event "unacceptable," and confirmed that French nationals were among those targeted.

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, issued a strong condemnation of the incident and urged Israel to uphold its international obligations.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris expressed his "shock" over the incident, highlighting that Irish diplomats were also part of the delegation. Meanwhile, Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Kravik stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel and reaffirmed his country's expectation that Israel respect their international immunity.

The incident has sparked growing concerns over the safety of diplomatic missions operating in conflict zones and raised serious questions about Israel's adherence to international law and its responsibility to protect foreign diplomats.

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, "is alarmed by these reports that the IDF (PC - Israeli Army) fired what they called warning shots at diplomatic personnel, which included UN personnel, as well," said Stephane Dujarric, the UN spokesperson at a press briefing.

"It is clear that diplomats who are doing their work should never be shot at, attacked in any way, shape or form.  And their safety, their inviolability must be respected at all times," Dujarric stated, adding that "Any use of force against them is unacceptable."

"We urge the Israeli authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, to share those findings with us and to take any measures that would prevent any other such incident to take place," the UN spokesperson stressed.

Dozens of diplomats arrived in the Jenin camp to assess the humanitarian situation in the camp. Israeli soldiers stationed at the entrance to the camp, fired live ammunition directly and intensively at the delegation and accompanying journalists as they approached the iron gate recently installed by the occupation forces, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

Siwar Ashur was born in November 2025. Her picture went viral. She is six months old, weighs 2.5 kg, and her face looks like both a baby's and an old woman's. She is also deliberately starving. The huge eyes in the tiny face are quiet and burning, devoid of guilt or anger. It seems that all the focus of life that has drained from the body has gathered in the eyes. "Sometimes I can't bear the pain," says her mother.

As this "war" becomes more and more one-sided killing, its sadistic nature is revealed. In the past two months, there has been no attempt to claim that children are being killed simply because Hamas is hiding behind them (not that any decent and sensible person believed this in the first place). The army admits that it is starving babies to death and killing dozens of defenseless people almost every night in order to "put pressure on Hamas." And the question arises as to what orders the pilots who fight against children, babies, and human fragments receive.

Since Israel violated the ceasefire on March 18, the army has killed over 3,000 people, including more than a thousand children (as of mid-week). About a week ago, a displaced persons camp was attacked. The refugees, including children, are suffering from severe burns. All this while the second largest hospital in the Gaza Strip has been closed and the ambulance fleet has lost 75% of its vehicles. A child was burned alive in Beit Lahia along with his father and pregnant mother ("Only human monsters kill pregnant women," said Benny Gantz).
