If Israel does not eliminate the Iranian threat, no one will, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

"Israel is not like other countries," Netanyahu told his Likud faction in a meeting which came one week after his meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House. "We are faced with security challenges that no other country faces, and our need to provide a response to these is critical, and we are answering the call."

"These are not regular times. The danger is hurtling toward us?The real danger in underestimating the threat," Netanyahu said, addressing the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. "My job is first and foremost to ensure the future of the [supremacist, apartheid - Oui] state of Israel ... the leadership's job is to eliminate the danger. Who will eliminate it? It is us or no one."

"Our relationship with the United States is of great importance," Netanyahu said. "Our situation today is different from our situation between 1996 and 1999. Our priorities must be inline with national security needs and we must unite in order to deflect the danger. The Defense Minister and I are working in coordination; he is not conducting an independent policy."

Netanyahu added that he reached understandings Obama, among them that the most important goal for both countries is preventing Iran from attaining a nuclear military capability. Netanyahu told Likud members that Israel received a number of key pieces of defense aid from the Americans.

"The president is on the line, sir." To which Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could have been forgiven for wondering, as the call was put through: Which president?

The immediate reason is that the former president has been echoing the Israeli leader's own words on the campaign trail.

After Israel killed the Hamas leader, Mr. Trump criticized President Biden's call for Mr. Netanyahu to move toward a cease-fire. "Biden is trying to hold him back," he said. "And he should probably be doing the opposite actually."

On the phone call last week, Mr. Trump went further on another Mideast front where the Biden administration has been urging Israeli caution: the expected military response to Iran's ballistic missile attack early this month.

Trump's plan is meant to boost Netanyahu's electoral fortunes and help keep him out of jail. But it can all backfire.

The devil is not in the details of the "deal of the century". The map that United States President Donald Trump tweeted on January 28 following the announcement of his Middle East plan shows what looks like a slice of Swiss cheese rather than of a sovereign Palestinian state.

But for Trump's main supporters - people like gambling tycoon Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam Adelson, who stood in the front row during the announcement ceremony in the White House - this was yet another win.

These days, it is people like Adelson, rich conservative donors to the Trump campaign, along with the president's evangelical base, who are calling the shots in Washington and Jerusalem. They are always there, in the front row.

They appeared satisfied and beaming at the 2018 inauguration of the US Embassy in Jerusalem - a move they had badgered and cajoled the president to make. He obviously did not regret it, even though the Palestinians severed ties with Washington as a result.

As far as Adelson commented, "the Palestinians are an invented people" whose sole purpose on Earth is to destroy Israel. Adelson was also among those who encouraged Trump to pull the US out of the nuclear agreement with Iran.

In a June 2019 opinion piece in the freebie Israel Hayom newspaper, the Adelsons' biggest endowment to Israel's political right, Miriam Adelson gushed, "Trump should enjoy sweeping support among US Jews, just as he does among Israelis. That this has not been the case (so far; the 2020 election still beckons) is an oddity that will long be pondered over by historians. Scholars of the Bible will no doubt note the heroes, sages, and prophets of antiquity who were similarly spurned by the very people they came to raise up. Would it be too much to pray for a day when the Bible gets a 'Book of Trump'?"

Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire best-known in political circles for losing a great deal of money trying to unseat President Obama in the 2012 election, is also a major donor to organizations that are pushing for new sanctions and war with Iran. Just yesterday, Adelson made some shocking comments on Iran that help clarify what the real goal is behind the latest diplomacy-killing sanctions push in the Senate. In a video recorded by Mondoweiss, Adelson suggests that instead of diplomacy, we should nuke Iran.

Adelson, an 80-year-old casino mogul and major supporter of Mitt Romney and other Republican political candidates, made the comments in a dialogue with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach during a conversation called "Will Jews Exist? Iran, Assimilation and the Threat to Israel and Jewish Survival."

The video I took at Yeshiva University, above, records the exchange. Adelson is in the foreground with his back to the camera. Boteach, a rightwing political figure close to US ambassador Samantha Power [Power's advocate in Jewish community] and NJ Senator-elect Cory Booker, is on his right. Neither Boteach nor the others on the panel- Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens and Yeshiva University president Richard Joel -- objected to Adelson's idea.

Adelson owns homes in the U.S. and Israel, where he is also a newspaper publisher. The dialogue began when Boteach, who calls himself "America's rabbi," says that Adelson believes that Franklin Roosevelt could have prevented the Holocaust. Adelson says:

"He could have prevented the Holocaust... Yes- if not prevented the Holocaust, he could have at least significantly reduced the severity of it."

Adelson said that Roosevelt could have convinced the British that it was "more important to them and to their future" not to sign the White Paper on Palestine in 1939 that limited Jewish immigration to Palestine. FDR had "unlimited leverage" because he could promise the British that the U.S. would enter World War II once the country ceased to be isolationist.
