President Donald Trump's new ambassador to the Netherlands, Peter Hoekstra has finally admitted that his 2015 comments claiming there were "no go" violent zones in the nation because of Muslim immigrants had been baseless.
Hoekstra claimed at a 2015 anti-terrorism conference that Muslims were causing "chaos in the Netherlands," burning cars and politicians and creating "no-go zones" in that country.
He told De Telegraaf that he couldn't recall what his comments were based on. "I mixed up countries. I was wrong. I can't recall how that could happen. I know: I was wrong," he said.
Hoekstra has been scorched by the Dutch over the comments, and his De Telegraaf interview appeared to be an attempt to make amends after a tough week.

For months, debate has raged in Birmingham over the role of Islam in the city's schools. An anonymous warning about Muslim fundamentalists has authorities alarmed. The allegations are serious: there are indications of an organized campaign to covertly co-opt schools in England.
An inquiry discovered that at several schools in Birmingham, girls and boys were segrated. At some schools, Arabic is a required subject, and Christian holidays are no longer observed. School trips are organized to Mecca and Medina. The conservative education minister, Michael Gove, has announced that with the coming school year, all state schools are required to teach "British values."

Conservative Boris Johnson thinks the Louisiana governor may need some "gentle education"
During a speech at the Henry Jackson Society in London last month, the likely 2016 presidential candidate echoed other conservatives in claiming that European countries like Britain harbor "no-go zones" where Muslim clerics enforce Sharia law and non-Muslims are not allowed to enter.
"In the West, non-assimilationist Muslims establish enclaves and carry out as much of Sharia law as they can without regard for the laws of the democratic countries which provided them a new home,"
Jindal asserted. "It is startling to think that any country would allow, even unofficially, for a so-called 'no-go zone.'"

The stark split between liberal and conservative American Catholic responses to and towards Muslims and Islam in the United States may be surprising considering that until the mid-twentieth century American Catholics were the subject of public and ubiquitous anti-Catholic hostilities. However, this split among liberal and conservative Catholics has a long-standing history, beginning in earnest in the mid-twentieth century after the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council.
In the twenty-first century and in the era of public Catholicism, American Catholics actively engage in discourses surrounding the presence of Muslims in the United States. By analyzing debates surrounding Muslims in the contemporary United States, this dissertation interrogates how white American Roman Catholic construct Muslims in the United States as Other and how conservative and liberal Catholics employ discourses about the Other to construct their identities as contemporary American Catholics.
Particularly focused on white Catholic American narratives about Muslim and Islam in the United States, this project asks what insights can debates among conservative and liberal Catholics about Muslims and Islam in the United States between the years 2001-2022 provide into contemporary American Catholic identity formation, as well as conceptions of citizenship, gender, and race?
Not only do these debates speak to differing ideas of citizenship, gender, and race among Catholics, but also to broader American cultural ideas about what it means to be American and who is eligible to be an American.
