The announcement of a meeting between Trump and Putin came just hours after the US president signalled that Ukraine might have to cede territory in order to end the war with Russia.
"You're looking at territory that's been fought over for three-and-a-half years. A lot of Russians have died. A lot of Ukrainians have died," Trump said at the White House on Friday.
"It's very complicated. We're going to get some back, we're going to get some switched. There will be some swapping of territories, to the betterment of both."
The US president did not provide further details of what that proposal would look like.
However, the BBC's US partner CBS News, external, citing sources familiar with the discussions, reports that the White House is trying to sway European leaders towards accepting an agreement that would include Russia taking the entire Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and keeping Crimea.
It would give up the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, which it partially occupies, as part of the proposed agreement, CBS reports.
Earlier on Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Putin had proposed a similar arrangement to Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff during a recent meeting in Moscow.

Tusk said Zelenskyy was "very cautious but optimistic" about the ceasefire, Reuters reported. Ukraine was keen that Poland and other European countries play a role in planning for a ceasefire and an eventual peace settlement, Tusk said.
Trump has said he is willing to meet Putin one on one without preconditions, including direct negotiations between Putin and Zelenskyy, stoking fears that Ukraine may be left out of negotiations for the framework of a potential ceasefire.
Bloomberg reported on Friday that the deal could cement some of Putin's territorial gains in Ukraine, effectively freezing the battle lines in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Putin has claimed four Ukrainian regions in their entirety, although much of their territory remains under Ukrainian control.
US and Russian officials were working on a deal under which Russia would halt its offensive in exchange for the territorial concessions - making it a politically fraught proposal in Ukraine, Bloomberg said.
Zelenskyy has responded by speaking with European leaders including the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who are key conduits to Trump.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Europe must participate in the peace process between his country and Russia after a call with the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, on Thursday. The Ukrainian president embarked on a lightning round of calls with European leaders ahead of a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin expected soon.
As the Kremlin refused a three-way meeting with Zelenskyy and Trump, Zelenskyy said: "Ukraine is not afraid of meetings and expects the same brave approach from the Russian side."
The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said she had spoken with Zelenskyy about the developments of the past days and "next steps on the way towards a negotiated peace agreement and Ukraine's future membership in the European Union as well as its reconstruction".
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, reaffirmed France's full support for a ceasefire in Ukraine and the launch of talks aimed at reaching a lasting and solid peace, after a "long discussion" with Zelenskyy and other European leaders. "I reiterated to the Ukrainian president France's full support for establishing a ceasefire and launching discussions toward a solid and lasting solution that preserves Ukraine's legitimate rights and guarantees its security and that of Europeans."

ANKARA -- Turkey will not support the EU's plan to ditch Russian gas imports, threatening Brussels' efforts to kick the bloc's remaining reliance on Moscow's energy.
Sitting at the EU's border, Turkey has long served as a conduit for Russian energy heading to Europe. But that connection is now under scrutiny after a recent EU proposal to eliminate all Russian gas imports by the end of 2027.
To execute its plan, Brussels wants to impose more monitoring requirements to better gauge how and where Moscow's gas continues to enter the bloc. To work, however, the EU will likely need information from key transit countries like Turkey. And Ankara isn't interested.
