Assessment Focuses on High-Capacity Batteries, Critical Minerals, Energy, Healthcare and Transportation
The Biden Administration on June 8, 2021, released findings from a 100-day interagency domestic supply chain assessment of critical products and outlined a series of steps it will take in order to strengthen U.S. critical supply chains and shore up domestic manufacturing, pursuant to Executive Order 14017 (E.O.). President Biden has pledged to invest in the U.S. domestic manufacturing capabilities and move the nation away from its reliance on adversaries - including China - for critical inputs.
On Feb. 24, 2021, President Biden signed E.O. 14017, directing a whole-of-government approach to assessing vulnerabilities in, and strengthening the resilience of, critical supply chains. (See Holland & Knight's previous alert, "Biden Order Aims to Strengthen Domestic Supply Chains in Key Sectors," March 2, 2021.) As directed by the E.O., federal agencies consulted with outside stakeholders during the supply chain review process to submit reports to the White House identifying risks to domestic supply chains and policy recommendations to address these risks. In addition to the 100-day review, the administration has also initiated year-long reviews of six broader sectors: defense, public health, information technology, transportation, energy and food production. Reports on those reviews will be delivered to the White House in February 2022.

Following the arrests of hundreds of Korean workers in a US immigration raid on a Hyundai Motor factory, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung ordered all-out efforts on Saturday to swiftly respond to the incident, Reuters reported.
South Korean foreign affairs authority said on Saturday that the US's crackdown and public disclosure of photos and a video of the arrest of hundreds of Korean workers were regrettable, especially as the incident followed so closely after a summit between the two nations' leaders, and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said Saturday that he may visit the US to discuss with Washington the arrests, according to multiple media report.
US immigration officials raided a Hyundai Motor car battery factory on Thursday and later released a video and photos of workers shackled at the wrists, waist and ankles getting on a bus after the raid, according to Reuters on Sunday.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho presided over an emergency meeting on the immigration crackdown, confirming that more than 300 out of 457 people who were taken into custody are South Korean nationals, Yonhap News Agency (YNA) reported.
"We are deeply concerned and feel a heavy sense of responsibility over the arrests of our nationals," Cho said at the start of the meeting, attended by two vice ministers, officials from the ministry and overseas missions, per the report by YNA.

Rob de Wijk: 'Trump destroyed everything'
Trump has destroyed everything we hold dear, that's the subject of geopolitical analyst Rob de Wijk's new book. "He has destroyed everything we built over eighty years."
"The Western liberal world order is now in shambles because of his policies," De Wijk says on Café Kockelmann on NPO 2. In his new book, "America and Us," De Wijk describes the bewilderment in Europe after Donald Trump began his second presidential term. Treaties were terminated, international institutions and aid organizations abolished, and traditional allies were thrown out.
According to De Wijk, it was immediately clear: the US is undergoing a second revolution and no longer shares important ideological core values with Europe.
Department of War
And Trump is going much further, as was evident on Friday. He signed an executive order renaming the Department of Defense the Department of War. According to Trump, this name conveys a "message of victory" to the world.
"It's a much more appropriate name given the current global situation," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, flanked by Pentagon Director Pete Hegseth. Hegseth will now be called the "Secretary of War."
According to Trump, this name change takes the US back to the time before the country became "woke." Before 1949, the Department of Defense was known as the Department of War. Under the National Security Act of 1947, it was merged with the Navy and Air Force. The new government agency was renamed the Department of Defense in 1949.

The National Security Act is amended, renaming the National Military Establishment to the Department of Defense. The change rescinded the cabinet-level statuses of Army, Navy and Air Force secretaries and made them all subordinate to the secretary of defense, whose authority and responsibilities increased.
The amendment also established a chairman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
