EU avoids harsh judgment of Trump, stakes too high

For those surprised by the EU's “cautious” response to the “spectacular” US intervention in Venezuela: the stakes are simply too high. A harsh condemnation of an unleashed Donald Trump would jeopardize more than just the safety of Ukrainians.

To begin with the latter: the idea that the US can withdraw its indispensable military support to all of Europe due to criticism from the EU is certainly not a lie. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio already threatened to do so last November. He sneered at "all those countries" that beg the US for weapons like Tomahawk missiles to protect Europe, but complain when America itself deploys those weapons in its own backyard [Latin America]. In other words: Europe, watch out, you'll be left alone and empty-handed.

The new peace plan contains strong security guarantees for Ukraine – from both the US and EU countries – and agreements on financing Ukraine's reconstruction. On Tuesday, the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing (Ukraine's friends) will meet in Paris to discuss the texts, with the aim of issuing a political declaration.

In this hopeful, yet precarious, situation, the EU does not want to add fuel to the fire by harshly condemning Trump for the ousting and kidnapping of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. "The stakes are simply too high," says an EU official. Not only for the current conflict – Kyiv cannot survive without the weapons and crucial information about Russian military activities provided by the Americans – but for Ukraine's future. Moreover, the EU does not want to weaken the essential American alliance with NATO.

Europe’s Lifeline Nord Stream Replaced by Conditional US LNG

US gas exports (LNG) to the EU are a second reason why the EU's tone to Washington is polite and measured. Now that oil and gas imports from Russia are almost at an end, the EU must source its energy elsewhere. LNG from the US is crucial; you don't want to jeopardize that supply during these cold days.

The same applies to the trade agreement with the US, the EU's largest trading partner. The agreement, which was difficult to conclude last year, is certainly not ideal, but it averted the threat of sky-high US import duties on European products. Giving Trump an argument now to sever the agreement is not in the EU's interest.
