Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) paramilitaries are leaving custom-made ace of spades 'death cards' at the scene of migrant snatch operations. The ghoulish practice has imperial origins. US troops used to stuff cards into the mouths of the Vietnamese dead. The practice - consider yourself trigger warned here, please - was even filmed for use in official military propaganda.
The truth is this isn't the first example of long-ago wars inflecting US immigration policy. America's imperial past and present is so deeply interwoven into Trumpian policy that we don't always see it. Yet these cards are one of several crystal-clear examples lately.
ICE leave death cards
The Intercept's Nick Turse picked up the story on 3 February. It appears to have originally been reported on 22 January 2025 by Latino community organisation Voces Unidas. After a snatch mission in Eagle Country, Colorado, relatives searching for their kidnapped family members found the cards at the scene.

Green Party leader #ZackPolanski hit back at the Prime Minister on Thursday, a day after Starmer accused him during PMQs of being “high on drugs, soft on Putin”.
Speaking outside Palantir’s London headquarters during a protest against the US tech giant’s NHS data contract, Mr Polanski slammed Starmer’s remarks as “disgraceful” and “deeply disrespectful”.
“When Donald Trump told us who he was the first time, we should have believed him,” said Polanski. “Our Government, through Keir Starmer, has been completely subservient to him — from defence ties to NHS data deals.”
Polanski repeated calls for an “urgent review” of US military bases in the UK and urged ministers to end Palantir’s £330 million NHS contract, citing concerns over data privacy and alleged links to the US immigration system.
The row follows Starmer’s Commons attack, where he ridiculed the Greens’ stance on Nato and drug reform, claiming their policies were “as reckless and irresponsible as their plan to legalise heroin and crack cocaine”.
Palantir’s involvement in the NHS Federated Data Platform has faced growing opposition, with doctors’ groups warning the US firm — co-founded by Trump ally Peter Thiel — is an “unacceptable choice” to handle patient data.

The memo, written in 2020, formed part of an FBI investigation into domestic or foreign influence over the US electoral process. It draws on information from a confidential human source (CHS) and appears among a vast trove of Epstein-related files released by the US Justice Department.
“CHS advised Chabad is doing everything they can to co-opt the Trump presidency,” the memo states regarding his first term.
Chabad-Lubavitch, a religious Jewish sect founded in Russia, has grown to an estimated 90,000 members. Its messianic, ultra-Orthodox ideology has repeatedly been linked to hardline settler colonial politics in Palestine.
The memo also cites Berel Lazar, a Chabad member and the former chief rabbi of Russia, describing him as a close adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Chabad is basically state-sanctioned Judaism. It is used by Putin to keep tabs on all the Russo-Jewish oligarchs,” the FBI memo adds.
It identifies Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as a supporter of the group and a key force within Trump’s inner circle.
“On the day Trump was elected President, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were at the gravesite of Rabbi Schneerson | TOI | who was the most powerful Rabbi in the Chabad network,” the memo states.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, battling for his political future, apologized on Thursday to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein for appointing disgraced Peter Mandelson, a friend of the sex offender, as US ambassador.
Starmer, who indicated he would not resign over the scandal, issued the apology after being dogged for days by his decision to send veteran politician Mandelson to Washington in February last year despite his ties to Epstein.
The latest crisis to hit his struggling government follows fresh allegations about the ex-envoy’s cozy ties to late sex offender Epstein that emerged in newly released files on Friday.
They have left many doubting Starmer’s judgment and some — including within his ruling center-left Labour party — questioning whether he can remain prime minister.
Through shared relationship with Epstein, Starmer expected an easy entry to the White House and President Trump for the sake of Britain’s economy and the City of London. Corruption in high places the new normal … oligarchy.
