"Racism in its ugliest form," "too disgusting for words," "a stain on our history," "this can't be true," "there's no lower limit": these are just a few of the reactions flooding social media to a video that US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social late Thursday night.
The video shows edited footage of the smiling faces of Barack and Michelle Obama, the first Black president and first lady of the United States, superimposed onto monkey bodies. The song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is edited beneath the footage. The comparison between monkeys and people of color is an extremely racist stereotype with a long history dating back to the nineteenth century.
The clip lasts a few seconds and is edited at the end of a video about the completely unproven "voter fraud" in the 2020 US presidential race, which Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Despite the storm of criticism, the video remains online.
California Governor Gavin Newsom calls Trump's behavior "repulsive" and calls on all Republicans to condemn the video.
